Is data the end goal or just the beginning?

Globally, 10s of millions of IP cameras are installed each year.  If we assume that there 100 million IP cameras installed worldwide (which may be a conservative number) and if each of these cameras were to unintelligently stream H.264 encoded HD video at 30fps, 24/7/365, the required total bandwidth would be ~ 859Tbps, or ~3.4 Zettabytes annually.  If even half of these cameras were connected to the cloud, it suggests that IP camera internet traffic may currently account for upwards of 1/12th of the total global internet traffic.  Clearly, these are ballpark numbers, but it serves to illustrate the scale of the problem.

Xilinx announced Zynq® UltraScale+™ RFSoC Gen 2 and Gen 3 last week, which established Xilinx as an uncontested provider of monolithic, direct-RF, single-chip adaptable radio platforms, now with greater RF performance and scalability.

Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC devices leverage the highly successful 16nm Zynq UltraScale+ MPSoC platform and add high-performance RF sampling data converters and reconfigurable Soft-Decision Forward Error Correction (SD-FEC). Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC Gen 2 device, sampling now with production scheduled for June 2019, pushes the analog input /output frequency to 5GHz to support the n79 5G NR bands in Asia and is available in a 16T/16R configuration. Zynq UltraScale+ RFSoC Gen 3 devices extend the input / output frequency to 6GHz covering the full sub-6GHz band and increase ADC sample rate to 5GSPS from 4GSPS and resolution to 14-bit from 12-bit.

When you have a great idea but only a little knowledge of the hardware and/or software that you want to use, what should you do? Start taking classes and learning skills one by one or find the right tools that are easy to use? One passionate team at Xilinx was not discouraged when they realized they had limited knowledge of Arm processors and development tools they needed to successfully create a simple but fun game. Let’s hear their story.

I recently attended Xilinx Developer Forum (XDF) in San Jose and there were several interesting updates regarding Xilinx’s innovative Zynq® UltraScale+™ RFSoC products. Here are some highlights for those who missed it.

First, Victor Peng’s keynote presentation on the Versal® portfolio mentioned the Versal AI RF series, which includes both AI Engines and RF sampling converters. This series uses AI Engines to implement most Digital Front End (DFE) functions at lower power compared to traditional programmable logic. More importantly, Victor’s keynote affirms Xilinx is committed to the RF data converter integration roadmap for the long term.
