Ryzen 3000 Safe Voltages and Degradation

Hello,

I guess you know where this is going...

So, I finally moved to a 3800x build! I love it, it is awesome. Tuned 3800mhz RAM at 1:1:1 ratio, beautiful! I also managed to tune all cores to 4.425ghz @1.325V. I’m using a Noctua NH-u14s with two fans. Temps running CB20 loop or AIDA stress are very manageable not hitting over 76C at full load. When gaming it does not reach those temps. Performance is fantastic.

Ok, so according to guidelines, 1.35v is MAX for manual core tuning/OC. But I am seeing people all over the forums saying that even 1.325v is not safe and degrades the chip. Is this true?

I have tried looking for a formal AMD post on the matter but haven’t found any. I am sorry if this has been discussed before, but it’s hard for me to gauge if those people are being genuine or just trolling..

Thank you all in advance

EDIT: Added SS of Ryzen Master with current settings.

Yes you are fine up to 1.45 volts.

1.35V is ok - 1.38V and you have degradation
so hope that your mobo is good in setting correct voltage

also - dont use too much current wenn tweaking pbo

I posted this:

Updating my definitive guide to configuring the Ryzen 3900X/3950X and all other 3000 Series CPUs

Last year, when I was reading about the TSMC 7nm node they (TSMC) were quoted as saying that it was specified for 1.3 Volts and that is what I have kept to.

AMD has a vested interest in declaring higher voltages "Safe" because their Marketdroids want to plaster as high a boost clock onto their junk as possible. And they don't give a damn as long as the CPU will at least work for the duration of the warranty.

If over time the CPU no longer Boosts "Up to 4.5 GHz" because as long as it can do 3.9 GHz they are not liable and if your CPU has degraded that you can no longer achieve the clockspeed you once did because it has degraded then you are SOL.

I am happy to see that AMD no longer lets Robert Hallock run is ignorant mouth in public, because he was just a lawsuit waiting to happen with the likes of this garbage:

Updates to Precision Boost Overdrive for the AMD Ryzen 3000 Series - YouTube

You will find that you can run your 3800X at 4.4 GHz stably at 1.3 Volts or even a bit lower.

From my testing of my own 3600X, 3950X and a 3900X that my friend in the US has allowed me to borrow I have found that this voltage is the sweet-spot for the best performance ratio of clockspeed to voltage. For instance on my 3600X I could run it no problem with an all-core of 4.225 GHz at 1.29375 Volts, but if I wanted to go just 25 MHz higher to 4.25 GHz per core I had to punt in 1.35 Volts to have it stable running something like CineBench R20.

Ive tested my 3800x for a few days to see where i could go..  I managed to get 4450mhz all core at  1.35 or so volts.   But i only kept it at this for maybe a few hours

The odd thing is i was able to get the memory and fclk to 1900mhz.. but then it just stopped working st that speed..  The cpu inifnity clock wont even boot at 1900 anymore.   It is rock stable at 1867 though.  So i jist left it at 1867.   I also stopped all core overclocking as i said i was only messing with it for a few days and just left the cpu to do its thing.

The problem im having is the updates AMD did last fall with new aegesa bios revisions has really hurt my cpus boosting.   My 3800x used to see 4500mhz all the time on all core randomly flipping from core to core.  Id see it in games.. and for single core cinebench 15 tests.. all core clocks were at 4300 or so.

Then after i updated windows and the bios to 1.004 aegesa and the chipset drivers.  My boost clocks dont even see 4400mhz.  I see maybe 4250 gaming and single core boosts i see 4300 average and i see a blip SOMETIMES at 4400mhz but average is 4300-4350.

I am 100-150 mhz below avertised single core clocks.  And im really pissed off.   Gigabyte still lists the f1 bios my board originally had.. and I think im going to downflash the bios to older revisions to see if i csn get the cpu back to where it used to boost too..  I cant remember though if flashing to this bios had one of those warnings where you cant downgrade the bios revision once you do it so ill have to check.

But for now i see terrible boost clocks..  Im so mad.. im thinking of calling AMD and see if i can rma this chip..   because i am not a happy camper to have spent more money on a few hundred more mhz over the 3600x 3700 and not even get to the 3700x boost clock speed anymore..

Ive had AMD cpu for over 20 years now from duron 1000mhz cpus to athlon xp to athlon 64s and operons and a 2700x and 3800x..   I have a wall of amd cpus..

And this is the first one im truely unimpressed with.

hey man i was reading 1.325 volt is degrading in Heavy Workloads and 1.47 volt under low workloads, Thats why they boost voltage is so crazy on ryzen. but anyways you would probably be more then safe at 1.39volts or 1.4v with your cooler if your just gaming and your cooler can handle it me myself i wouldnt go past 1.375 with my coolerfan speed set to 1650-1800rpm with that good thermal paste 13mk at least.

But to answer your question anything past 1.325 At full load on your chip is degrading. But hear to help you out so mine 3600x is at 4400ghz on one ccx and 4425 on the other and i run that at 1.3volts but if i run cineabench so a full load on my cpu my Voltage Will Go down to 1.264 or 1.272 so keep that in mine when your overclocking the voltage u set it to still wont get use at full load a great software is hwinfo thats what im using in the pics .

hope this help you out.

I run at 1.42v 24/7.

1.42V will cause degradation of the CPU
1.38V should be max for 24/7 - 1.35V would be safer

So 1.35V for 24/7 all core clock tuning is safe?  That is awesome! I was very happy with my CPU running at 4.425ghz with 1.325V but walked away from it because of degradation fears infused by people on Reddit. I will go back to them again. Or perhaps stay at 4.4ghz @ 1.3V ?  What do you guys think?

I would go for the 4.425 if its 100percent stable running cinebench r20 on a loop for like 2min if cinebench crashes ,step it down to 4.4ghz i got my 3600x at 4.4ghz at 1.325 volts and when i run cine bench my  core vid is 1.290 not 1.325 like my v core so i know its stable if ur core vid is the same as ur v-core you know its not gonna be stable u Have to put a Load on it to see it go down and have precision boost ENABLE in your bios thats a big help overclocking man !!!

you need "LLC" (LoadLineCalibration) to force your voltage to stay around 1.325V under load (not all mobos have that option)

Thanks, my motherboard is the MSI MEG x570 Unify. The board is very good. Using Auto LLC, voltage barely moves when testing with CB20. It's very competent in my opinion. I have also heard that I should strive for a little voltage sag when going full load for better thermals.. How true is this?

lets say this

if you rock 4.2GHz with 1.5V it will be way hotter than with 1.35V

Ok so I managed to tune the CPU to 4.4ghz at 1.2875V for VCORE and its stable! Using LLC at AUTO on the motherboard the voltage does not exceed 1.294V but does not go below 1.280v so it's pretty tight in there. So far I am HAPPY! as temps are very good using a 360mm AIO and perf is also great. Thank you all for the help!

I wonder if the same 1.3V limit applies to Zen3. Any of you know about it?

The limit for ryzen 3 for runing 24/7 max voltage without itdegrading is 1.325 but if ur getting 4.4ghz at 1.2875 its not gonna be worth the extra .025 .050 ghz ur get from it . i would stay Make sure you update your bios i got the new bios for my x470 gaming max board witch was updated amd agesa comboam4pi 1.0.0.6 and i was able to put my voltage down from 1.3125 to 1.2875 With the same overclock and LLC set to mode 4 im pretty sure  if u get 4.5 ghz under 1.35 volts i want Those setting but Good luck dude have fun overclocking DONT GO TO MUCH ON UR RAM !!! i have broken many ram sticks trying to push them to much if u do MEMTEST86 IS ur bestfriend but now u got ur overclock for ur cpu overclock ur ram just abit  to get the max Performance
