PCIE 4 on B450

I have a B450 motherboard which I believe is using PCIE 3. I like to upgrade the processor and though from spec the motherboard can support up to 5000 series but they are mostly using PCIE 4. Will there be a performance issue or difference with I buy the latest processor like Ryzen 5 5600 and install on my B450? Or better to find older higher end model processor which is more compatible with my motherboard? I am currently using Ryzen 3 3100.

Your system will run faster with the Ryzen 5 5600. More cores & threads = Faster!

The way I understand it, you need a MoBo that supports PCIe4 to use it with the 5 5600.   You can still use the 5 5600 but you will still only get PCIe3 bus speed.  Definately check your Mobo Specs, I think some 400 series boards do use PCIe4.  I'm using a Asrock x370 Taichi with a new 5 5500.  I would have done the 5 5600g but have no video out on my MoBo.  Then there is the price...

You will get a big performance bump .. just no PCIe 4.0 support for other devices .. GPU's, M.2 drives ..etc

You'll need to update your  BIOS to latest .. read the BIOS notes to see if you need a certain BIOS version before updating to the next BIOS .. and/or if you can update to the  required BIOS for 5000 series Ryzen support with your current CPU. I think ASRock boards will say don't update IF you have a Ryzen 3 3100 and you'd need a different CPU installed to perform the update .. pretty much any other CPU than the  3100

I would look at your Motherboard's Spec and see what it mentions about PCIe slots with various CPUs installed.
