My Ryzen 7 1800x won't seat properly on motherboard

I was having a heat issue with my pc, it turned off automatically when the processor was getting to hot. I realized that my liquid cooler ( with 3 fans to keep the radiator cool) was clogged with hair and dirt, ( have many animals inside). Once I cleaned everything very thoroughly I turned the pc back on and the auto shut happened again due to heat. This cooler has always keep my processor in the 30ish Celsius. I then went to clean and reapply thermal paste, good stuff. had a hard time finding fitting the processor into the socket, but eventually got it. This time the on/off button would not start the pc, nothing would happen. I then reset all components into their slots. Nothing, then removed the water cooled connection to the processor. When I pulled it out the processor came with it, and now the processor won't stay in place, after I place it in and put down the little silver bar to secure it properly. Did I break the lock in place device and if so can I leave it "in the secure position" and attach the cooler to it and tighten it down, or is it going to not seat properly with being secure first? Could this cause the power button to not work? Thank you, Pul

One way to find out if it is an issue that the CPU is not secured tightly and making good contact. Put downward pressure on the CPU while turning on the computer and see if it starts to boot. If it does then you need to repair the motherboard CPU latches or install a CPU Cooler that has it own latches that you install in the motherboard.

Possibly that you may have bent some pins while trying to install the CPU since you had a difficult time installing it. Check for any pins that may have broken off or are bent. Several other Users had damaged the pins on a Ryzen when the CPU came off with the CPU Cooler at the same time.

Basically, a loose CPU is not good. Remember that the motherboard probably vibrates a little from all the mechanical devices connected to it like fans and Hard drives. It may be enough to cause intermittent contacts with some of the CPU Pins unless tightly secured to the motherboard socket.

Hi Jive,

Well, I tried pushing in the processor and pressing the power button. Nothing happened. However, after doing that the processor is secure in the socket and not moving. I checked it for bent pins, burn signs and it looks like a brand new 1800x. So, maybe the CPU is good, (wishful thinking and m/b ok), and the "case" has a bad power button. When I was placing the air cooled radiator I did use some force in the area of the power switch. Wondering now if I just damaged the power button or pulled something loose. Anyway to bypass the power button on the case?

Thanks so much for writing back and your suggestions and help.

regards,

Paul

That happened to me once also. The Motherboard has a small area where you connect two or three wired tiny connectors from the case to the motherboard. They normally are cables from the computer case Power and Reset switches, Power and Hard drive case LED lights, and Audio or case Speakers. It is easy to disconnect one of those cables if your arm accidentally rubbed against it . If the Power cable from the Case power button came off then that is your problem.
