Thermal paste spread using pea method. (I’ve also repasted for the 4th time and this time I did the spread method but temps stayed the same.)
Hello, I’ve recently swapped over to AMD from intel and Nvidia, starting with a 10900k 3070ti to now with the latest 9950x3d and 9070xt.
I was extremely happy when i finally got to build the PC however I was greeted with high idle temps of 55-60c and when running Cinebench it reaches up to 90c at full pump and fan speed. I am aware that these CPUs do run hotter than normal CPUs but other 9950x3D builds I’ve been seeing have had idle temps of only up to 45c.
I’ve also noticed that sometimes when I restart the PC, I get stuck in what I’m assuming is memory training mode. Red led and flashing orange led. I usually just cold boot my pc and it posts normally.
PC specs are:
9950x3D
Sapphire 9070xt Nitro+
Arctic LF 3 360, mx-4 thermal paste.
AsRock B850 Riptide
64 Gb 2x32gb Trident Skill Z neo rgb 6000 mhz cl30 on EXPO
2 TB 970 Evo plus
Corsair Rm1000x
NZXT H6 Flow
3x120 side intake, 2x140 bottom intake, 3x120 top exhaust with 360 Rad and 1x120 rear exhaust.
I’ve posted this on reddit as well and before you post, here are the things I’ve done:
Repasted 4 times, involving cleaning CPU and AIO block. (So please don’t write “did you peel the sticker off the AIO?”)
Used curve Optimizer, I believe this just allowed my cpu to boost to higher clock speed hitting the same temperature.
Used a profile preset on the AsRock mobo with PBO -30, 85c TJmax (idle temps still sat at 55-60c)
Made sure the pump was working and aio block was mounted and screwed on properly.
made sure the fans were oriented in the right direction. 5 intake. 4 exhaust.
Help and opinions would be appreciated. I’ve also emailed Arctic, waiting on a response.
Your AIO and fan orientation sounds good. Try running your system with the side cover off and see if that lowers the idle temperature a bit. If not, you probably have good airflow going through the case. Next I would consider undervolting the CPU and then the GPU to lower the heat generation. Reaching 90 C under full load isn't the end of the world and I think it's still within specifications for the CPU, but I too would be concerned.
Temps stayed relatively the same with side panels off. I’ll try undervolting 😁.
Those temps are fairly normal. My 9950X3D idles in the 50s too. 🙂
I also wondered if my temps were a bit high. Depend on who replies most think they are normal but often see why there is a slight concern. Hope this helps the data.
System Specs:
Case: H7 Elite
Motherboard: ASUS X670E Extreme Crosshair
Cooling: Kraken Elite 360 AIO (exhaust)
Additional Fans: 120mm rear exhaust, 3x 120mm front intake
GPU: 5090 Founders
CPU: 9950X3D (upgraded from 7950X3D)
Previous 7950X3D: Idle temps were in the mid-40s°C, but after BIOS update 2904, they increased to 50-55°C. Also worth mentioning, I switched from an ASUS ROG Strix 4090 to the 5090 Founders around the same time, so I’m not sure if the temp change is related to that.
Current 9950X3D: I’ve noticed that the idle temps never go below 60°C—sometimes 59°C—but they never dip lower than that. While gaming, however, the CPU stays under 70°C.
Fan Speeds: My 3 front intake fans run around 1400 RPM, while the top and rear exhaust fans stay around 1100-1200 RPM. If I set my fans to full speed, the temps do drop to about 59°C, but they still don’t go much lower than that.
Not too long ago, with a similar setup, my system ran about 5-10°C cooler.
Have you tried using less paste?
What program(s) are you using to monitor temps? I'm using hwinfo, adrenalin and ryzen master. I idle at 47c.
Nothing special here but a Corsair 5000 case, 3 side intake, 360 artic DFIII front mounted pulling , 3 exhaust top, 1 rear exhaust. My 7950x3d idled that same temp, but I ran the fans higher. This chip is cooler, so, much quieter after lowering the fans.
Cinebench temps top out at 83c -30 PBO Enhanced 3.
Gaming, never above 60ish.Atomfall is running in the 50s.
Cinebench r23 45k score.
