Radeon VII - Hardware fault?

Hi,

i have bought a used radeon vii gpu card. Loading drivers does give errors.

Is this a hardware fault?

Any ideas? Can i test the card with a certain software?

Hi @funx

To me it sounds like the person might have flashed the graphics card with another vBIOS and might have failed, thus the GPU might be bricked now..

Maybe someone else can weigh in on this as well.

Kind regards

can you post your computer information like is this a Work Station PC or a regular PC?

What version of Windows are you using or are you using Linux OS?

What is the Make & Model of your GPU Card, Motherboard, & CPU?

Please upload a GPU-Z Image of your Radeon VII GPU Card. That can show if you were given a fake Radeon VII or possibly the BIOS has been modified and whether the AMD driver is properly installed or not.

NOTE: As Hitman mentioned it might have a modified VBIOS on it (for Mining as an example). So you might need to  flash your vBIOS again to get it to work correctly.

If you know the exact Make & Model of your Radeon VII you can try and download a vBIOS from TechPowerUp website to flash your GPU card again from here: https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/?architecture=AMD&manufacturer=&model=Radeon+VII&interface=&memT...

Hi,

i also tried to flash the PowerColor Version of the image, but also with no success. Still get the same error.

Thank you that is helpful.

If you look at the bottom of GPU-Z you should have more than one box with a Check mark. With the Radeon VII you should have :

OpenCL, OpenGL, Vulkan, Direct Compute at least marked with your version of AMD Driver.

I also noticed that your OpenGL version is 1.1. It should be much higher at 4.6. There have been a couple of AMD Threads opened showing OpenGL version 1.1 instead of 4.x versions.

So your AMD driver is not installed correctly or is corrupted.

Here is the latest AMD Driver for your GPU Card: https://www.amd.com/en/support/graphics/amd-radeon-2nd-generation-vega/amd-radeon-2nd-generation-veg...

GPU-Z is not showing any GPU Clock speeds nor how much Memory you have installed.

Here is TechPowerUp Specs for the Reference Radeon VII: https://www.techpowerup.com/gpu-specs/radeon-vii.c3358

Looks like the GPU card is a AMD GPU Card according to the Sub Vendor. If it would have been XFX or MSI or some other it would have stated that.

At the right top corner of GPU-Z, Click on "LOOKUP" and see exactly which GPU card you have and who manufactures it.

This Tech site gives you instructions on how to Flash a AMD GPU Card: https://appuals.com/how-to-flash-the-bios-on-an-amd-gpu/

Also this gives instructions on how to flash a Bad vBIOS on a GPU Card: https://medium.com/simplemining/how-to-recover-a-bricked-graphic-card-a58691cbf8dc

See if any of the above links helps you flash your vBIOS on your GPU card.

Seems a bit upside down.

Lookup from GPU-Z tells me its an ASRock.

But the card is an

Any ideas left?

I have no idea.

The only thing that comes to my mind is your GPU BIOS Chip is defective or something else is defective in your GPU card.

Because if you installed the AMD driver it is again showing that it isn't installed correctly or is corrupted.  Plus GPU-Z is not showing any information concerning your GPU card parameters.

I would try and flash the vBIOS and make sure it is successful to see if it fixes all the problems.

NOTE: You can send the Serial Number of the GPU card to Powercolor and ASRock Support to see if it is their card or not. Also once you find out who the manufacturer is maybe they can send you the correct BIOS to flash with.

EDIT: As an example only of how your GPU Card should look like in GPU-Z. Here is my Nvidia GTX1070 GPU-Z:

AMD GPU cards doesn't have API CUDA and PhysX.

@funx

Can't you see on your physical card itself if it has branding on the fans or such with logo's like "MSI/ASRock/PowerColor", etc.? Furthermore, or a serial number at the back of the card?

Kind regards

I am in contact with the vendor (Powercolor) now. He has confirmed the card as out of warranty and checked also the rom as valid that i have transfered.

He suggested a new install and try again to install the drivers. If this is unsuccessfull, he assumes an ASIC error.

I have justed asked if there is something that could make that sure. A testing programm or something else.

Also i have asked, if there is a possible way to get some kind of repair.

@funx

Seems like the person or place you purchased the Used Radeon VII sold you a defective GPU card or a incompatible GPU except for mining only.

Really hope you can get it working again @funx .

It is an intel i3-9100 CPU with a Biostar TB360 MB and 8GB RAM.

Using Linux 5.4 kernel and Windows 10 with amd drivers. Within windows i get a questionmark in system manager for the card. And when i delete the adapter and then rescan for hardware, the GPU is detected but then the AMD software does not start.

Sir the reason why I ask for an image of GPU-Z because that gives a huge amount of information concerning your GPU card.

Otherwise someone else will need to give their suggestions.
