No sleep mode, no projection, card not detected/working

Jump to solution

For last couple of months (I think since updating to Windows 1903 and then rolling it back due to crashing), I've been unable to access sleep mode/its controls, or use the HDMI output ("Your pc can't project... try re-installing the driver"). AMD Settings software also typically tells me I don't have an AMD graphics card, so won't run.

I have exhausted so many hours trawling help forums, attempting things that at best did nothing, and at worst caused repeated blue screening. I have combed my settings, I have been to a repair shop, and I have updated my drivers 'til the cows came home! I've uninstalled, deleted, updated again, automatically, manually, through Device Manager, through software... it doesn't matter. I've tried several previous versions of Adrenalin including 19.9.1 through 19.11.2. Half the time my Device Manager shows a code 43 warning error that the R7 M260 card is simply not running, and none of it solves my problems. The new 2020 edition of Adrenalin gave me a 195 error and got stuck. I also read that Catalyst may be more appropriate for my old card than Adrenalin, downloaded it, ran it - no joy, now uninstalled. In the midst of all this, my computer demanded I update to 1903 again.

I'm just about ready to kick my laptop back to factory default. I am beyond fed up of updates that break as much as they improve, and desperate for another solution? I can live without sleep mode, but being unable to link a 2nd monitor is extremely inconvenient, and I suspect these are just the problems I've noticed so far, not the least of it! I'm worried a component is physically damaged beyond repair.

I'd be very appreciative on help or advice to resolve this. My specs are-

HP Pavilion 15 Notebook 64bit
OS: Windows 10 Home
Version: 10.0.18362 Build 18362
Processor: AMD A10-5745M APU
BIOS: F.36 09/02/2015
RAM: 16GB
Display adaptors versions 26.20.15002.61(as of right now. As mentioned, I tried a bunch... these at least don't give code 43 errors)
AMD HD 8610G (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_990F&SUBSYS_22C6103C&REV_00)
AMD R7 M260 (PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6900&SUBSYS_22C6103C&REV_00)

Your graphics and APU are considered Legacy....meaning no more updates. Trying to install the latest drivers just doesn't work...these are the last drivers available for your laptop. You only install one of them...Laptop graphics update...How to

*Bump*

I have updated my BIOS to F.46 18/04/2018 through HP's site, and tried another few AMD driver downloads. Still having all these issues and noticeably suffering lag in pretty basic video games. I've also just tried the new AMD Auto-Detect and Install tool; it recommends Version 15 from September but unhelpfully returns an error (195) everytime I go to install it. I'm submitting install logs to technical support.

Cheers for the clear instructions, and good to know i should be looking at processor rather than adapter.

Doing this fixed my sleep/projection problem... however, the catalyst installer opened on restart, told me I had no AMD graphics card installed, blacked out all the buttons so I had to ctrl+alt+delete it away, and a minute later my laptop blue screened. (because of "atikmdag.sys") I swiftly rolled the driver back on reboot, and am back to square one.

If you look in Device Manager....see any yellow marks?

You need to take the necessary steps to prevent/delay Microsoft/Windows update from automatically installing/changing drivers. Windows 10 forum has several methods: https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/id-Windows_Update/

I see the yellow warnings, yeah, that's the code 43 I mentioned in my original post.

I tried using Wu10Man to block all Windows updates; deleted and re-attempted the old driver install. It lasted longer, but still blue screened for the same file issue. I'm wondering if some other driver I've previously updated is causing a conflict, not that'll ever figure that out.

Would going back to Windows 8 solve it?

You should try a clean install using DDU in Safe Mode...disconnected from the internet.

Thank you, King, I appreciate your continued responses and help! The combination of using a DDU and your guide from the 2nd seems to have done the trick (at least I've gone an hour so far without it blue screening). My regular features of sleep, projection, brightness settings etc. have been restored.

FYI for anyone else using this thread to resolve similar problems - the downside is games on Unity now crash with an access violation, which I remember experiencing before and fixing with a driver update. It isn't a huge issue for me personally, but something I'd like to fix down the line. I've seen 2017/18 drivers on guru3d, so maybe that's something to try.
