Maybe I'm a dunce and this is normal but I read where some people are operating their CPUs at temperatures of 95C? My PC restarts if my temps for my CPU or CUP Package exceed 60C. Normally, this doesn't happen but for some CPU intensive games it does.
I have lots of fans blowing air in and out of the PC case. I'm using a Noctua NH-D15 SE-AM4 Premium Dual-Tower CPU Cooler (I can only fit one of the two 140mm fans due to RAM below the second) . I have three 120mm fans blowing air out of the top of the case, three 80mm fans on the front of the case blowing air in, a 140mm fan and (I think it's) a 60mm fan on the back blowing air out. The thermal paste is slightly more than a year old.
When I'm idling the CPU and CPU package are around 40C to 50C...the package is always slightly hotter than the CPU typically running at about 51C when idle.
I don't understand how some people write about their Ryzen 9 3700X is running at 80C when my PC restarts once I trip over 60C. In the Winter months this isn't any issue but during the Summer months, without AC in the house, it can go over 60C.
Am I just not understanding how this is supposed to work or have I somehow manually set the limit to 60C?
Hello ItalyJay, can you check with a software to see the temperature of the motherboard to see what are the temps of the other components before it shutdown, something like HWiNFO (hardware info) or whatever your favorite? If everything looks ok in the software, can check your power supply if it's not full of dust? If everything is clean, can you ask a friend if you can borrow a proper power supply to see if it could be the one overheating (because of a defect), but I am not sure if psu do that to protect themselves....
The mobo I have is displaying the temps directly on a lcd on the mobo. I could still try the software you make mention of but does it keep a log to see after shutdown what the temps were that I'm hitting. I'm almost certain it's restarting when either the CPU goes over 60C and the CPU Package goes over 70C.
Ok. I never faced that problem so I cannot really help more than that. But if you have a reliable computer shop near where you live maybe consider taking your pc there. I am sure that they have a bunch of spare parts so they can test all of your computer parts with more accuracy.
Be safe and be of good courage
I remember a thread in the past here at AMD Forums when another User had the same issue. He tried everything to prevent the processor from shutting down at a temp below 70c.
Turned out to be a defective CPU when AMD Replaced under Warranty.
I suggest your open a AMD Support -Warranty Ticket and see if they believe you need to RMA your processor to be checked and or replaced from here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/contact-email-form
I don't think it's a faulty CPU because I had a Ryzen 7 3800X and it was also doing this during the hotter months of the year. I thought an upgrade would eliminate this issue. It hasn't.
