SATA port expanders | TechPowerUp Forums
This post seems to have gained some commentary and I have discovered a few on TechPowerUp that have used this kind of hardware
When there are no free slots the SATA port multiplier unit is a welcome relief.
My X570 like most ATX motherboards have 6 SATA ports and I have noted that the southbridge could offer 8 ports if the board was configured for it.
Sure a PCIe card with lots of ports is one option but these cards cost a lot more pesos, The expander is < $20 for the model shown.
My Cooler Master HAF 932 has 5 hard disk bays. The chassis front panel has a eSATA connector and the card reader / usb 3.0 box also has one. I have a couple of DVD drives installed so I need to consider what my needs are.
iTunes can import and eject automatically so importing a box of compact disks is faster with 3-4 DVD drives. The SATA port expander is all that is needed to fill the front with more drives,
I have seen modern chassis with no provision for DVD or USB box. My X570 has dual front USB 3.2 headers so I could support dual front boxes.
