Ryzen 9 5900X and high temperatures

Dear AMD,

I bought a new AMD Ryzen 9 5900X processor. It is a super chip. However, this processor has high operating temperatures. At IDLE 45-55 degrees, at full load up to 87-89 degrees. I use Noctua NH-U12A as processor heatsink. I don't think such extreme temperatures are OK. Where can the problem be?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 5900X
MB: B550M Aorus Pro-P (F11p BIOS)
Heatsink: Noctua NH-U12A (Dualfan)
PSU: Seasonic Focus Plus 550W

Thanks for reply.

I have same problem - in Cinebench it even reach 97 C !!!!! on AIO Alphacool Eisbear 360

Ryzen have also strange peaks while idle periods - when it jumps from 45 to 65 with no reasons !

Have You resolve that problem ?

I've got a 5800X and it idles at 33C but will hit the same peak temps. I initially bought the Noctua NH-U12S but returned it for the NH-D15 which seems to handle the temp spikes from using desktop apps like Firefox a little better. Cinebench multicore and Prime95 temps eventually hit 90C using either cooler, it just takes a little longer with the NH-D15.

This tech site gives some good suggestions for CPU Coolers for those processors: https://ovrclock.com/best-cpu-cooler-for-ryzen-9-5900x-5950x/

Best CPU Coolers for Ryzen 9 5950X & 5950X
  1. Best High-end Air Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X – Noctua NH-D15
  2. Best Budget Air Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X – Scythe Mugen 5 Rev B
  3. Best Low Profile Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X SFF Builds – Noctua NH-L12S
  4. Best Silent Air CPU Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X – Be Quiet Dark Rock Pro 4
  5. Best RGB AIO Liquid CPU Cooler For Ryzen 9 5900X and 5950X – Corsair H115i RGB Platinum
  6. Best Silent AIO Liquid CPU Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X – Fractal Design Celsius+ S36 Prisma
  7. Best 280mm AIO Liquid CPU Cooler for Ryzen 9 5900X & 5950X – ARCTIC Liquid Freezer II 280mm

The above list is fairly consistent with other Tech site best CPU Coolers for those processors.  Some differences depending on the date of the article.

NOTE: Those processors have a TDP of 105 Watts and a Maximum Operating Temperature of 90C.

When the temps start reaching or has reached 90C, the Processor will automatically start to throttle to maintain the Temp at 90C or below.

it is normal for ryzen 5000 go to 90'C with PBO2

The best way to handle the temperatures is to let Ryzen do it.  It is the most direct way to handle the temps,

It does a fabulous job and you don't lose that much performance.

Set PBO to Advanced.

Set Limits to Manual.

Set Thermal Throttle Limit to Manual

With the new field "Thermal Throttle Limit" available, set it to what ever you like,   I like 75 (Celsius)

Then Ryzen will adjust frequencies, core dispatch, MultiThreading, and voltages to keep in line with your desired Temp

I even took the Fan off my Noctua NH-U12A and ran Prime95 and the temps didn't go beyond 75C  (what I set it at)

The Ryzen makes these adjustments 1000 times a second.

Hello. You must have a problem with your computer. Today I bought a ryzen 9 5900x and installed it with mugen 5 rev.b cooling. Everything is perfect, the temperature in OCCT at 100% load is 68-72 degrees Celsius. Temperatures at rest are 33 degrees Celsius. My case is https://www.silentiumpc.com/en/product/regnum-rg6v-evo-tg-argb/  (AIRFLOWING). Maybe you put the thermal paste wrong. I always put a thin layer on the entire surface of the processor so that it covers the entire processor. And I use Grizzly Kryonaut thermal paste. I hope my hint will solve your problem. greetings

Worth A lot of words right there; obviously mine is on a Msi board and controlled by MSI Center with CPU And Fan controlled by it, Game boost is turned on.  And running a Corsair 150i Elite AIO
