Ryzen 7 5800x Overheating and Shuts down my PC

Hello everyone! I'm new to this community and as well as with AMD Ryzen products. Technically, my rig is new and I had it built last week.

But I have a problem, the idle temperature of the processor sits around 70 degrees celcius (158 F) and i searched some workarounds with undervolting and set the PPT, TDC, & EDC at 120, 85, and 130 respectively, and turning the curve optimizer to all cores, negative, 30. It improved the temp and sits around from 50 degrees to 64 degrees (sometimes spikes to 70 then goes back to 50's) but when i play Witcher 3 Wild Hunt (all maxed out) for at least 2 minutes, it automatically restarted my pc and received "cpu over temperature error", the clocks speed are in stock, and the only thing i modified was the PBO and nothing else, not the clock speed or anything. i also have the fan speed to turbo (if you need a photo of my rig, i'll send a picture). i have a deepcool cooler installed on the processor.

My PC Specs

AMD Ryzen 7 5800x (stock clock)

Colorful Battle Ax RTX 3070 8GB

2x8 GB

ASUS Prime B550M-K

Deepcool cooler (for the processor)

Cooler Master 750w Bronze

Stock coolers that came from the case

a response and workaround to my problem would be deeply appreciated.

I see that you have a low profile Air CPU Cooler. Is this because your computer case is not a tower type computer case but either a mid-tower or smaller computer case?

Screenshot 2022-01-30 171510.png

The Air CPU Coolers that are rated at or above 150 TDP ratings are usually quite massive and large. So you need to see what type of computer case size you have before purchasing one of those top Air CPU Coolers.

Noctua has one or two low profile CPU Coolers that are powerful enough for your 5800x processor but they aren't cheap. Maybe some other CPU Cooler manufacturer has something similar but cheaper.

If you have a small computer case than maybe a AIO might be more suitable.

But as mentioned the CPU Cooler you now have is not sufficient to cool your powerful AMD Processor which is why it is overheating.

Deepcool make a lot of coolers, so what model do you have ?

Have you set overtemp too low is bios ?

Also try asking on asus support forum, or an overclockers forum for optimal non oc bios settings for your cpu/mobo combo.

Ryzen 5 5600x, B550 aorus pro ac, Hyper 212 black, 2 x 16gb F4-3600c16dgtzn kit, NM790 2TB, Nitro+RX6900XT, RM850, Win.10 Pro., LC27G55T..

hello thank you for the reply.

the deepcool cpu cooler i have is DeepCool UD551 ARGB

and idk what part of my bios is overtemp, and i haven't touched anything in bios aside from PBO and fans control. do you mean the platform thermal throttle limit? because i have it in auto.

Hi,

When I upgraded my PC, I got a Deep Cool AIO and it was rubbish..

It would make a clicking noise and even at times when it didn't my temps were really high..

It is now in it's box and I have a Lian Li Galahad 240 ARGB cooler that works perfectly..

I would change that cooler you have for a start..

AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, Asus Tuf Gaming RX 6700 XT, Asus TUF Gaming x570 Plus, 32gb G.Skill TZ neo 3600mhz, Samsung 980pro 1tb NVME, Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1tb NVME, Lian Li Galahad AIO 240mm, Antec Titanium 1kw.

well, if it's really the cooler then i guess i have to go with noctua and hope for the best. if deepcool cpu coolers are really rubbish then i've wasted $20 for it

You don't say what your cooler is?

Is it air or an AIO water cooler?

oh yeah i forgot to mention my cooler, it's DeepCool UD551 ARGB and it's air cooled

That cooler's junk.  No $20 heatsink will be adequate to cool a 5800X running at full tilt.  If you're sticking to air, you'll want a full-size tower cooler and I haven't seen any for under $40 that I would buy to cool this CPU.  The good ones are at least $50-60 and go up from there, but there are a bunch of good ones.

I think if I had to buy another heatsink for a 5800X I'd probably get a Scythe FUMA 2.

hello! thank you for clearing this up. i was scared that there's something more than just having a cheap cooler. i was wondering if this issue would be resolved if i go for AIO cooling? because i'm eyeing for nzxt or corsair aio cooling. do you think that's adequate enough to cool my processor? and yes, my cpu is not a tower type. idk if that would affect the overall impact on the temperature

If your case has the room go for 240mm AIO..

Like I said, I have a Lian Li Galahad 240mm AIO and it is brilliant..

AMD Ryzen 7 3700x, Asus Tuf Gaming RX 6700 XT, Asus TUF Gaming x570 Plus, 32gb G.Skill TZ neo 3600mhz, Samsung 980pro 1tb NVME, Samsung 970 EVO Plus 1tb NVME, Lian Li Galahad AIO 240mm, Antec Titanium 1kw.

hello again! you're right about my cooler being the culprit of thermal throttling. i placed my ud551 into the box and got noctua nh d15 and its idles are around 48-52 degrees and 67-70 during gaming, all volts are set to default. thank you for the help, as well as the other commenters who said the same thing.

I had the same problem... I watched a ton of youtube videos how to undervolt the cpu with no success

But then i looked in performance manager and relized that it is windows whos the bad guy so now my cpu works **bleep**ing Awsome!!!

hi, sorry for a late reply but do you think corsair icue h100i elite capellix is adequate for my cpu?

I have an H100i (RGB PRO XT) and when I briefly had a 5800X it seemed more than capable.

QB

and the case that i'm about to transfer my whole rig into is a darkflash dlm21 mesh, i haven't bought or seen the case itself other than in online but i have no idea how optimized is the airflow for my specs
