Hi, I've looked but can't find an answer to my query so I hope someone can help.
The above CPU is on an Asus Rog Strix 550-F motherboard and has 2 matched sticks of 8 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro at 3200Mhz in slots a2 and b2. I wanted to upgrade the RAM and bought two further sticks. The new sticks use Samsung flash whereas the old two use another makers flash.
If I add one of the new sticks to a1, it boots and shows 24GB of memory. If I add the second to b1, the PC doesn't post. I've tried all combinations, mixing the different flash makers but only 3 are accepted.
I've tried to check with Asus but their online support is terrible and this motherboard's help is always down - I'm in Asia by the way - and thus I'm here.
I've read many comments elswhere that it may be the Ryzen or the motherboard or even the Vengeance but can anyone please confirm that you can only use 2 sticks in a2 and b2 and that 2x16 GB at 3200 or 3600 before I wast more money?
Many thanks for reading.
Cheers, John
Hi, in the support page check memory QVL, if the memory sticks aren't there you maybe out of luck. However mixing brands normally its a No Go .
There is also the possibility of slot damage, try booting the working pair on A1 B1, it should boot but not with DOCP enabled.
My opinion, I would't Invest in 32gb right now on AM4 if its just gaming. Save for AM5.
Good luck
Thanks Jonnyenglish. I've checked out the sticks and they are listed. Also their part numbers are the same although not the memory manufacturers. They are:-
SK Hynix CMW16GX4M2C3200C16W (XMP) 2x8MB 16-18-18-36 v5.33
Samsung CMW16GX4M2C3200C16W (XMP) 2x8MB 16-18-18-36 v4.32
The SK Hynix where bought at the same time os the MB and the Samsung are the recent purchase. The brand is Corsair RGB PRO in both cases. T Asus QVL, which I was able to find on the US site, says the board can take up to 4x16MB so size and number shouldn't be an issue.
So other than the memory maker they are identical.
I change them over again to check on CPU-Z and another anomilly has occured. I was using slots a2 b2. Previously when I tried to add all 4 it was b1 that caused the PC not to post. When I changed over from the Samsung to the SK Hynix (just 2 sticks) I put them in a2 b2 and it wouldn't post. I tried a1 b1 and it booted.
I have no idea what that is telling me other than b1 works.
So could it be that the memory makers are the problem even though they are identical Corsair sticks?
Oh I forgot, without DOCP enabled the bios reads a much plower speed, I think 2200, but I'll try.
Cheers, John
Update: I turned off DOPC added the samsung chip sticks in a2 b2 and..... it booted. Went back into BIOS and truned DOPC back on (it was showing 2132Mhz, half of 1066 not turned on) saved out and it booted.
Walla. I suspect I used different chip makes in a1b1 and a2b2 so I've learnt a lot about memory sticks.
Many thanks for your help and have a good Christmas.
Cheers, John (and English, LOL)
