I guys I have the 5900x. This pin on the photo is actually missing (hard to see). May I ask what this pin is for and if it could cause me any trouble? It's the 3rd one across at the top left corner.
First thing, did you break the pin or did you get the processor from the Retailer already broken?
If you broke the pin, no matter what reason you have, your 3 year AMD Warranty is automatically voided. If the Retailer sold you the processor with a broken pin I suggest you get a replacement or refund.
Now to answer your question.
The best way to find out if that pin will affect your processor's operation is by installing it and see if it boots up and works normally and doesn't crash when running a CPU Stress test.
Most likely it is a redundant pin like ground that wouldn't affect your processor operation.
Don't worry it shouldn't damage your motherboard. The worst that can happen is the computer won't boot up.
Thanks for your help. It's second hand. I do have a question though, which pins in the 5900x are redundant? That would ease my mind otherwise it's going back to the seller.
Btw now my gpu isn't showing up or working. Could that be related?
If i received a preowned processor and I paid money for it I would expect the preowned processor to be 100% physically sound.
A broken pin on a processor is a major defect. That is probably why AMD voids its Warranty if a customer broke a pin as a result of Customer Error.
I would return it back to the seller that they sold you a processor with a broken pin. Doesn't matter if the pin is important or redundant and it wouldn't affect the processor.
Since PCIe x 16 first slot on the motherboard is controlled by the processor it could be a possibility that it might be a processor issue. Install the GPU card on a different PCIe x 16 slot and see if it is recognized in BIOS and Windows boots up.
But a GPU not showing up or working can be many reasons besides a defective processor or Motherboard.
You would need to google your processor's pin layout to find out exactly which pin is broken. The processor has several Ground pins so if one breaks it won't make much of a difference since the other ground pins will allow the processor to continue to run unaffected.
Well it was $300aud which is good price. However I do agree. Unfortunately I can't change the slot of the gpu as there's no room.
Forgot to mention, since you are not the original owner of the processor you have no AMD Warranty even if the processor didn't have a broken pin.
So since you have no Warranty on the processor why take a chance and lose all that money you paid for in accepting a damaged processor?
