Is my CPU dying?

I purchased my 5800x3d this last December for Black Friday.

I mainly play WZ2 on my PC, it has been running smoothly until today.

I ran WZ2 benchmark 4-5 days ago when I got a new PSU and GFX card.

I launched WZ2 today and noticed I was getting about half the frames I usually get from 160-200 to 80-100.

Old Results:

Today's results:

I don't do any overclocking and the graphics settings are the same between the two benchmarks yet today it started performing significantly worse.

Any ideas?

neywherk, I doubt your processor is dying. You should open a Support request with your Main Board vendor. Be sure you get all your AMD drivers from here. I would suggest you run a virus check. Enjoy, John.

Is your processor temperature reaching 90c by any chance?

if it is then it is throttling or slowing down which would cause the FPS to be less in a game.

Your processor's Maximum Operating Temperature is 90c which means once it reaches that temperature it will automatically start to throttle.

Try running OCCT CPU, GPU, & PSU tests and see if it all passes and none is overheating and the PSU has good Power outputs.

Did you update any drivers or apps in the last few days?

Check Windows Task Manager and see if there are any apps that might be causing your CPU to be kept too busy also look in Task Manager's Performance and Resource Monitor to see if you see anything abnormal.

Thank you guys for your replies.

After hours of troubleshooting I thought that maybe Windows had done some sort of silent update and messed something up in the background so I was going to run a system restore.

The recovery kept failing with a message stating that my AV is most likely blocking access to a file. I usually game with my AV (BitDefender) disabled so I made sure to check that it was still disabled, it was. A comment on another thread stated that BitDefender sometimes still works in the background even when disabled and that I would need to uninstall it if I wanted system restore to work.

I thought to myself, "If it's still messing with Windows while being disabled maybe it was messing with my game even though I had it disabled"

I launch the game after uninstalling BitDefender and run another benchmark. CPU timings back down to 3-5ms from 8-10ms and frames back up to where they should be, in fact they are 5-15 frames higher than they were before. I've been using BitDefender for the better part of a year and for whatever reason it decided to have a seizure yesterday. Windows processes only showed it using 0.1% CPU resources and yet it was annihilating my CPU performance.

Thanks for the update.

Bit Defender is one of the best Antivirus program around. But if you need to disable or uninstall Bit Defender to be able to play games then you need to go into Bit Defender's or Windows Firewall and allow your game file to have access to the internet or to be whitelisted from being scanned by Bit Defender.

I would also check Bit Defender's settings to see if there is any settings that you can disable to allow you to play games without interference.

It is possible that Bit Defender was scanning your game as you played thus slowing it down.

I would also open a Bit Defender Support ticket and let them know that you needed to uninstall Bit Defender to be able to play your games.

EDIT: Found this Bitdefender thread about the same issue you are having with games. It is old but still valid: https://community.bitdefender.com/en/discussion/60105/bitdefender-blocking-games

From Bit Defender Support on how to create a Game Profile so it won't interfere: https://www.bitdefender.com/consumer/support/answer/2066/

How to configure the Game Profile

During a gaming session, you can configure the Bitdefender Game Profile in order to enjoy an uninterrupted gaming experience. You can find more information in our friendly guide below.

What is the Game Profile in Bitdefender?

Bitdefender detects when you play, work or watch a movie, so it knows not to bother you with unnecessary requests. Depending on what you are doing, Bitdefender temporarily halts pop-ups, adjusts visual settings, and pauses unimportant background activities, so you can enjoy your device to the max. Enjoying an uninterrupted gaming experience is all about reducing system load and diminishing slowdowns. While running in Game Profile, Bitdefender uses behavioral heuristics along with a list of known games to automatically detect running games and optimize your system resources so that you can enjoy your gaming break.

According to your activity, the following product settings are applied when the Game Profile is activated:

  • All Bitdefender alerts and pop-ups are disabled
  • Automatic Update is postponed
  • Scheduled scans are postponed
  • Search Advisor is disabled
  • Special offers notifications are disabled

How do I configure the Game Profile?

You can configure the actions taken by Bitdefender while in Game Profile, by following the instructions presented below:

  1. Click the Utilities icon on the left sidebar of the Bitdefender interface.
  2. In the Profiles pane, click Settings.
  3. Click the CONFIGURE button from the Game Profile area.
  4. Choose the system adjustments you would like to be applied by checking one or more of the options displayed in the new window.

How do I add a game to the Games list?

If Bitdefender does not automatically enter Game Profile when you launch a certain game or app, you can manually add the application to the Games list:

  1. Click on the Games list button.
  2. Click Add.
  3. In the new window, browse to the application’s executable file and select it.
  4. Click OK to add it to the list.
  5. Click Save to close the window.
