Impossible to disable Virtualization on a AMD Ryzen 5 PRO 5650U with Radeon Graphics

Hello,

I own a HP EliteBook 835 G8 witch a AMD Ryzen 5 Pro 5650U and I need to disable the virtualization to use a software called Dlight (I'm working as light engineer for theater).

I've so many thing to disable virtualiation (I followed the steps of this topic  https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/ish_5637142-5637191-1 but the option "CPU SVM virtualization " in my Bios menu is grey and cannot be disabled...

Do you have any solution ?

Charlie39, I think you really need to talk to HP and ask them. Your link to HP support does not work. Please correct it-like to see it. Can you do a Clear CMOS on your system? If you can, please do. Thanks and enjoy, John.

Found the HP Support download page for your laptop with Windows 11. IF not change to Windows 10.

Make sure I have the correct Laptop Model before updating anything on the laptop.

Since this seems to be BIOS issue mainly do you have the latest BIOS installed from March 18, 2024: https://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers/hp-elitebook-835-g8-notebook-pc/38492636

Also update your Laptop CHIPSET driver and see if that makes SVM available now in BIOS from the link above:

Here is AMD Laptop CHIPSET but I would use this only to troubleshoot. Click on "Release Notes" to make sure your Mobile Laptop processor is supported: https://www.amd.com/en/support/chipsets/socket-fp5-mobile/amd-ryzen-and-athlon-mobile-chipset

If you don't have the latest then install the latest BIOS Version and see if it changes anything concerning  SVM settings.

Is SVM that is greyed in BIOS actually showing as being enabled?  Generally this setting is "Disabled" by default in most BIOSes by the manufacturer.

If it is enabled and greyed out in BIOS means that HP permanently enabled that feature for some reason.

NOTE: SVM is also called AMD-V in other types of BIOS versions.

From MSI Support this might also be the same for your HP laptop BIOS. See if you have IOMMU in your BIOS Settings. If you do disable it and see if SVM is now changeable:

The AMD Virtualization has been enabled in the default settings. If any change is required, please refer to the guide below.


A. AMD IOMMU:

1. Open BIOS menu.

2. Go to Advanced- > IOMMU and enable/disable AMD IOMMU:

3. Go to Advanced -> SVM Mode and enable/disable AMD SVM.

From my opinion, if SVM is greyed out means that you will need to contact HP SUPPORT to see if they have a new BIOS version with that setting that can be changed or if they have some workaround method to disabled it.
