Hi Folks. I'm going to try and be detailed as possible regarding high idle temps, specifically for my 7800X3D
For the first time EVER i have stepped away from Intel/nVidia and recently built my first all AMD PC with the following specs.
CASE: Deepcool CH560 Digital (stock fan setup 3x140mm front Intake, 1x120mm rear exhaust) all controlled from mainboard
EXTRA CASE FANS: Deepcool FC120x3 (1 intake in bottom of box, 2 exhaust in top of box) all controlled from mainboard
CPU COOLER: Deepcool Assassin IV + Deepcool Thermal paste
CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D
PSU: Asus TUF 850G ATX3.0 850W Gold
MAINBOARD: Asus TUF X670E-PLUS WiFi
MEMORY: Teamgroup T-Force DELTA 2X16GB DDR5-6000 cl38 EXPO
HDD: Teamgroup T-force Cardea Z540 2TB M.2-2280 PCIe 5.0
OS: Windows 11 home Ver. 23H2
You can see the build here: https://pcpartpicker.com/b/3Rt8TW
Lets talk about Idle Temperatures.
After Build completed on 08/03/2024 I noticed from first boot that my idle temp for the CPU was sitting on 45c at bios (keep in mind windows was not even loaded at this point), I instantly thought that i had seated the cooler wrong or something was up with the thermal paste application... I then installed windows to make sure everything was running okay and so i could install various Drivers and software like ASUS Armoury Crate, GPUz, iCUE and specifically Deepcool Digital (the case has built in temp and usage monitors for CPU and GPU). Low and behold the CPU idle is sitting at 47c on GPUz, iCUE and the Deepcool Digital. So i re-installed and re-pasted my CPU cooler. This yeilded the exact same results for temps.
It's since been as low as 44c but often sits around 46-47c. After posting temps and asking around on PC parts picker ive determined that these CPU's can be as low as 30c when idling regardless of Aircooler or AIO with a rough average of between 35c-40c. So I installed HWiNFO64 and Cinebench ready for some testing. Looking under the CPU section in HWiNFO64 i noticed something odd, all the CPU core temps apart from "CPU (Tctl/Tdie) " and "CPU Die (average)" were about 36c-37c. I though to myself how could the average CPU temp be 10c higher the actual temps of any or all of the cores... It didn't make sense. I also noticed around this time that Asus Armoury Crate had a dashboard with various senors and info showing the CPU temp to be 36c-37c...
Regardless i began a bench with Cinebench to see what temps would do using HWiNFO64. I quickly reached 81c on the CPU (Tctl/Tdie) sensor at full load and saw a push until about 85c of which i set a thermal limit in Bios. Clock speeds were ok but obviously throttled hitting around the 85c mark. I checked Asus Armory crate temp to see it closer to 10c cooler than the average in CPUz or HWiNFO64. Thats when i noticed what seemed to be causing the average of my CPU package to be 10c higher than all the other sensors.
In HWiNFO64 after the CPU section is the Motherboard sensors section. The top 5 sensors in their are all thermals and they read:
Motherboard: 34c
CPU Package: 81c (same as CPU (Tctl/Tdie)
CPU: 70c <10c cooler?
Temp9: 24c
TSI0 (CPU): 81c <<< This is the only sensor that isn't an average of other sensors
Turns out that the TSI0 sensor seems to be bringing my average temp up at least 10c sometimes 13c in some situations. It is directly proportional to my overall temp, as in it completely governs the CPU temp all together.
Has anyone else noticed this causing them high readings, or even better does anyone know where to find this sensor on the motherboard?
I have already emailed ASUS support about the issue and i eagerly await their response.
Even if this doesn't really effect you, could you please post your CPU idle temps and CPU cooler model... it could help me get to the bottom of what's happening
ANYONE FROM AMD YOU ARE MORE THAN WELCOME TO COMMENT ON CPU IDLE TEMPS AND THERMALS UNDERLOAD REGUARDING THE TSI0 (CPU) SENSOR THANKS
regards. HeyDoe
Solved! Go to Solution.
Well at the time of this post my CPU idle temps are as low as 43c and looking at about 81c+ for 100% load pushing 5050Mhz on all cores max. It seems that the discussion with Asus about the sensor in question was not very eventful and they don't seem to know which one i am talking about.
By all accounts there are some people with idle temps of 35c and some with temps of 45c and the only people with worries are experiencing high load temps (like 90c-95c range). Getting my temps down i have moved 1 fan from exhaust on top of case and put it into the bottom of the case as an intake creating more positive pressure while also reducing my GPU idle temp from 40c to around 35c which in turn is dropping CPU temps faster and having them idle slightly lower. I also adjusted my fan curves to kick the fans in at lower temps. This makes a bit more noise but most of the time I'm wearing noise cancelling headphones and this build was more about effective air-cooling and gaming than a quiet PC that can cook steaks.
To anyone experiencing temp issues on the idle level I hope this small forum chat helps put your mind at ease. I would have liked lower temps on both idle and load but technically they are well within the specified operating temperatures of the CPU... If your struggling just do your due diligence with updates and different configurations and you can always hit the forums if something still seems wrong.
Have you flashed the motherboard BIOS to latest version? Last year ASUS and some other board partners were overvolting VSOC higher than it should with EXPO enabled, it is fixed in a later BIOS release.
Sure have man, first thing i did before windows got installed
HeyDoeAUD, you should be using Ryzen Master (RM) to monitor temperatures and never run more than one monitor at a time. Please post screenshots of RM at idle and running Cinebench R24. Please post images of only RM. Thanks and enjoy, John.
Ryzen Master unable to inititalize. Kindly Reinstall the program.
Hence Aborting!
give me a bit and i will post some stats
excuse me misterj, any thoughts on the posted temps? do you think they warrant further investigation as i do? you may see under full load 4.8ghz @80c. I've seen full load temps (unconfirmed) as low as 70c for the same processor or even less, also idle temps as low as 30c... I'm not saying its a CPU issue i honestly believe its the sensor on the mainboard. I posted a HWiNFO64 jpeg below showing my temps and stating my issues... Any feedback or opinions are greatly appreciated
Armoury Crate CPU sensor is a board based sensor, not a readout from the CPU sensor itself. You can change the setting, or at least it was possible before. However, the fan curve will be adjusted from this unless you do it inside the board BIOS.
As for idle temps, check if the minimum processor state (inside windows) is set to the lowest value so it can step down when not needed, thus lowering idle temps as well.
Finally, curve optimize it to get the most.
7950X with a 240 Ryujin sitting idle at 35-38C HWiNFO64/Ryzen Master/Coretemp, they all show the same. Armoury Crate shows less.
Good luck
Thanks for the stats mate i really appreciate it. See your temps of 35-38c seem much more reasonable for an idle CPU, anything sub 40c i feel is fair. TBH im still thinking its a Mainboard issue. Anyone with this Asus TUF x670e PLUS WiFi board getting same issues i wonder
My minimum processor state is set to 0%, one of the first things i do in windows is set my Advanced Power options up for gaming. I have HDD to never sleep and display never turns off also. you think it would make a difference?
As far as curve optimization i tried a -30 from BIOS on all cores and it booted but never ran a stress test. i have reverted all settings to normal for now as i thought having an all core undervolt doesn't really fix the high idle temp from stock. kind of want to get to the bottom of this
Hi Team.
From yesterday got also some strange chooke on going at Forza5 or HL_Alyx in VR,
and desktop was not neough good that have safe setup cut-off main power when reach to close upper LVL Temp or PWR better to not make barbecue.
Hard reset log again, and again crash,

Get fixed stability and CPU load drop down rapidly, CPU and GPU temps are now even lower than before but is only that I redefine react graph points at dynamic set FANs RPMs via Temp relations to go earlier colling as in profile was.
Get faster fan spin with +400rpm on standard values with same temp -5deg. from basic profile.
Maybe some one get use of it - in my case works with harmfull soft MS get off my system hidden tasks go out now permanently in best way hard way.

well. Not sure I am fully following you my brother. anyone else able to help BartPP
No Bro I no need solution just got my case placed at some similar symptoms of crashing OS at no stress operations, got some removed updates from MS KB packages as always they got something more than supposed have on DLL files and all work of system gets pretty sick, after that system get back stable cool handling, so I fit rework at fan adjust vs CPU temp. time start to spin fans when reach some points
No need normally help from specialist - I'm kind of fanatic those toys so I will fix by myself take advance new problematic situations as challenge.
But thanks for fast respone never can be so fast timing at Corpo MS HelpDesk service.
no worries BartyPP happy to help where i can
I asked Google to translate but it doesn't speak troll apparently...
I know everyone should only use Ryzen Master but check this shot of what i think is happening
CPU Package is the right temperature, the line bellow that says only CPU is the sensor i mentioned before, its not actually on the CPU. Thats what Armoury Crate reads and FansXpert will adjust the fans from.
I'll try to post a screenshot of mine once I get home.
Do you see the sensor I'm taking about down on the motherboard, it seems to be the thing bringing my temps up as all the other sensor are at least 10c lower. I have spoken to a few people on pcpartspicker they have similar temps to me though mine seems to be the highest I've come across. i may actually take the 3 extra fans out and see if that makes a difference with a greater positive pressure. though i doubt it will...

Hey I am in a similar situation like you. I have tried everything nothing seems to bring down those idle temps
Idle temps - 50 - 60(never seen it dib below 50)
Disable the int graphics
Did curve optimizer of 25 and PPT limit of 75w
Ran the All fans at max speed for 5 mins cpu didn't budge at all.
Even did re pasting with Noctua NT - NH1. 0 improvements.
Please let me know if there is anything to bring down this idle temps
PC specs
7800x3d
Asus tuf b650
Lian li vision
lian li galahad trinity 360mm
4070 ti super
I´ve had the same problems as you are, with a Asus rog strix b650e-f gaming wifi motherboard.
I had 75c+ at idle allso, and all cores are running at 100% (with 1% load) (5050mhz) at all times.
I have tried the processor in another working PC, and the CPU does exatly the same.
So i returned it, and got a new one, this one allso sits a 100% core, at all times, BUT, it even with that, it temp idles at 50c.
Nothing have changed in my PC beside the CPU
If you have one of those with high temps, you can set, in windows power management , the CPU max to 95%, then it instantly drops to 50c at idle.
But why does the core clock sit at 100%?
The PC i tried my in, had a Ryzen 9 7900X3D in it, and it did not sit at 100% core at all times, why does the 7800X3D that?
Greetings bro,
I am facing the same problem with you. I build my first pc on 04-16-2024 with 7950x3d and a 360mm water cooler.
The idle temperature is about 45-50C with a room temperature of about 20-25C。When I open a webpage of a game (eg. Baldur's gate 3), the cpu Tctl will be up to more than 55 shortly. But the temp for cores are always about 10C less than that for Tctl. It seems that the Tctl sensor is put in a hot place. So I do not think the temp matters.
But when I look at the idle power consumption,it reaches more than 50W.
I have tried all possible methods I can to low the idle power consumption but none of them works.
Could you please show your cpu's power consumption so that I can I can get a general idea of what's going on with the x3d cpu. If your cpu's idle consumption is not very high but the temp is high, that might indicate this is the problem of amd's design, which lead to the situation that the Heat collects at the top of the cpu and can't be carried away by the cooler.
Best wishes.
Luca what motherboard are you using?
Also my wattage sits on about 30W on idle if that helps.
Since originally posting the idle temps have dropped to 44c and sometimes as low as 41c
Hey DoeAUD,
Sorry for replying late. I just moved to a new city and received my pc from home.
My motherboard is GIGABYT B650M AROUS ELITE AX ICE. May I know your bios settings to compare with mine to see why the idle power consumption of my pc is so high.
Much thanks!
Alot of it depends on ambient air temperature also. Example, If you are a cold bunny and keep it @75F in your house, your idle and load temps are going to be higher. The fans are pulling that air also to cool the system and through the radiator on your AIO. Would work the same with a custom loop also. But you will always get better cooling UNDER LOADS with a custom loop because the blocks / pumps are just better. You could stick a couple radiators in a bucket of ice and watch temps drop or I have seen someone build a bracket for a MO-RA3 and hang it out the window and extreme benchmark with his temps because of the gains.
I am running a 7800x3d and 7900xtx. I idle @40C CPU and 25C GPU and it is 69F in the house and 40F outside (Littleton, CO). After running a quick Superposition benchmark, no OC, CPU 63C, and GPU 39C. Now that EK 7900xtx block is the most badass on the planet. No matter what I do I have a hard time to get it to 50C, on a custom loop. Just as reference. To me these are the little things that separates the 10C everyone is looking for. And now you can de-lid the 7000 series to gain a little more on the CPU side.
1. Custom loop will always get better cooling.
2. Ambient air makes a pretty big difference.
3. Remember, we are always talking about 10C difference. Everyone is always fighting and worried over 10C and as long as you are within the manufacturer's specs under full loads, who cares, don't worry, it will be ok.
4. I tried to put a few ideas in here for anyone to try. I especially like the MO-RA hangar outside the window. You could gain -20C!!!
Sweet Hydro System Routing Design - I see it's a Velocity2 AIO - nasty angled quick joints, got to have on my R7950 - to green freaks get their global planet Heat Get Lower few deg. by me too 8-]

My water pump sometimes get noisy like inside of closed system >> pump >> pipes >> cooler >> is to much of air of not fully loaded liquid and buble's make trip around circle all make sometimes jump to pump and it's not normal for sure - As 4 Mechanical Engineer - I know what is happens when to fast pressure drop and raise at short time at that kind devices "cavitation"=No-Good --> AIO on my plan to buy short time.
This one "Velocity" looks pretty handled designed, strictly twice thinked and looked before builded.
Can U provide some of details of Your AIO Toys - it's as kit set or all segments made by hande pre prepared Hydro structure, patch route, direction In-Out, Nozzles other accessory ect. ,
Look Nasty Work Was Done In Good Style Fixing in Place like Already Was Pre-Desigend For This AIO At Beginning.
It's so not simple to get on such way fine fit in - hard to predict what kind CPU-GPU-PWR-Case-Termo Spots and get each PC on market already be compatible - correct me if i'm wrong.

Velocity 2 CPU block for 7800x3d
Quantum Vector 2 for 7900xtx
Barrow fittings and pipe
Corsair 360 and 120mm Radiators
Lian Li TL LCD fans 120mm
Bykski 360mm and 240mm Reservoir w/ LCD pump
No preset kit. I buy everything individually and put it together.
No issues with bleeding the air or pump noises. I keep both pumps around 4000rpm and have room to go to 4800rpm if needed
I was gifted the case to see if I could build something in it. So, I just gutted the whole inside and made everything work.
Build log: New Mod - AMD Community
Using the 360 Res with the 360 Rad for the CPU loop. Idling around 32C and topping out under load around 68C. 7800x3d runs a little hot. Ok with me. Love that Velocity 2 block. I will get around to trying it out on a different CPU down the road to get some results.
Using the two 120mm Rad's and 240 Res for the GPU loop. Idle 23C and under load I top out around 45C on just about everything. Perfect for me.
I have seen this a few times over the years, but I wouldn't personally try it. Plus, it would take forever to clean it all after you were done with that setup. lol
Hi again or maybe still. //dr dree//
U might have point .
costs and all manegem,tn hardware might be not so easy and quick if need plug on some drive to reset system data backup ect - floppy 5.25 even format often operation now on time discoverry between play with dinosaurs // heheh thousand years ago era still in backup memory my head soft
so costs to eventual results be not calculated balanced - cost taken - temp drops skill.
cheaper and faster to sdo in even air fans some mega versions could be reached but like B575 on starting to fly off airport spinning jet engines.
so i contact my local supplier of CPU block to provide me technical info if is compatibility with my ASRock MB end other hardware - wish too not have repeat blockpoint like on first Motherboards for Ruzen9 of asus that was already fried out of some bad touch not handy IT self called computer specialist and make kil my byed one part trying to lucky shot that will run on lees usage - bad shot a take max version cpu and even OC make to check what is worth my machine what can i take it if need extra boost - better to know not to some time disappointing of black screen LCC reached line scrap..

pipes are from air pressures magistery will do fine also joint with nice pressure handle and sealing - only im not auer what is the lower DIA of inner size to make liquid flow nice and not stressing to much pump those thermal load needs get out side fast and not kicking pump same time on this.
all pumps got limit for how much up giht than can transport designed liquid so better to make upper barrier of possibility = more temp efekt doped and longer life time LCC is also in this calculated by manufacturers from first bulb company agreement corpo for bounty to collect in never ending story it's a fact.

hi
im new here and my general lang not eng so excuse me ,
all i have to say is ,
im the intel fan , ( i was )
after 20 yrs ( im talking about athlon x series cpus)
i just came back to AMD for only one reason and that was the 7800x3d ,
i taked an asus rog strix E-A series gaming wifi
first after assemble the rig , at the first boot it take me to the bios , cpu temp was 41c and mobo temp was 31c !!!!
i just install win 11 pro and install cpu temp ,
that's all , no app or driver installed its only a raw windows , but all 8 cores work at full loads ,
4.2 , 3.8, and two cores works on 5.0GHZ !!!!!
temp was same as what bios shows 41c , but if i run a simple setup it goes up to 60~66c
i did update the bios to the 2401 the latest one
but nothing changed and all cores works in high frequency even on powersaving mode and i have to say i disBled the ultra performance mode in power plan from control panel and deleted it !
is it normal for ryzen cpus specialy this one 7800x3d to works in full load every time and has no idle clock ??
or cpu remp shows me the wrong cpu cores frequency ???
i also heard about the damages that 7800x3d can do to asus mobos x670's and burn the sucket in some areas , so i just aftaid to turn it on
is any one heard any thing about this?
if , just if we accept the 41c cpu temp for idle ,
so why this cpu should works in full load on desktop while no programs or apps are runing ???
how can i fix this?
is it come from motherboard or its the cpu issue and it should back to rma ???
i also asked this from asus and amd technical assist and waiting to their answer ,
thx
