Hello community,

long time intel user, and system administrator at work.

Decided to switch to AMD because many reasons. 

Got MSI X870E Carbon WiFi and 9950x

RAM is 2x32GB Crucial@4800 1.1v super standard and used in my intel setup for 1+ years.

The system was nice for like 5 days, and died this morning. I'm super frustrated, no computer to work now.

While working I think everything was OK. 39-40C on idle, 76C on cinebench R23 scoring 42000 points. Water cooling from corsair H150i elite capellix.

Was light gaming diablo 4 on medium settings (with my 4090 Asus TUF) and running some virtual machines that were not doing much (windows and linux) and watching youtube and twitch. That was all the load I put to that CPU for the 5 days I had it working.

And this morning the PC just didn't start. Tried resetting the bios, tried different RAM (2x16GB Corsair@6GHz) tried reverting to the previous bios, nothing, it just doesn't want to boot. The debug code stops at 64, which according MSI is some kind of CPU initialization.

It's not my first PC I'm assembling, I'm extremely careful with everything, paying attention to every detail, have many years of experience.

Why did it die like that ? I can't work, you can't imagine my frustration at the moment, any suggestions what it could be?

bgadmin, cannot answer your question of why. Please post all your parts and OS. Is your memory on the MB QVL? Try one memory stick in all slots then a different stick in all slots and see if any boot. An AMD processor may not run with memory intended for Intel. Also see here, especially the one from MeanMachine41. John.

1TB Lexar 720 in the 1st NVMe slot.

Clean install of windows + the drivers for win10 from the MSI site.

Everything worked OK for 5 days, and suddenly this morning when I powered the PC it does not start and behaves like on the 2 videos I shared here.

And YES the memory is in the MSI supported list for the X870e Carbon WiFi.

Crucial CT32G48C40U5 DDR5 4800

Supports 1,2 and 4 DIMM modules of 32GB. I was using 2x32.

Thanks, bgadmin. Please do not get AMD drivers from the MB vendor. Get AMD drivers ONLY from here. Have you tried the suggestions by MeanMachine41? Have you tried one memory stick and all slots? Where did you get your copy of Windows? John.

Could you try setting pcie version on the NVME's or see what happens with either one out?!

Hi, if it does not go past the CPU error during POST.. going after other components may be pointless.

Do the basics as you would do at your job.

Clear CMOS. Power Cycle it. Re Flash or update BIOS. If fails check possible hardware damage, could happen... Look for bent pins on the board.

You can try with only one stick of ram, why not. Or removing GPU and use the iGPU, again, why not.

Its troubleshooting season, anything goes.

Hello, thanks for the suggestions. Tried all that and nothing helped. Also here we are not fighting something that was not working after being assembled, it was working completely fine and then one morning it just didn't start any more.

Except the MB and CPU that are new, all other components are used for 1+ years with no problems what so ever. They are components, anything can break at any moment, I accept that, but all the traces lead to the CPU (or could it be the MB?).

My OS comes from the vendor btw.

After all the good reviews and expensive components that I selected, as a new AMD customer, I expected something different than 5 days of usage.

We can call it bad luck, such things happen, that's why my CPU goes back to amazon, but after that negative experience some questions rise?

What should I expect as a new customer from AMD?

Can I count on stability and reliability? I'm not OCing, reliability comes first for me, I just want to set and forget.

Can AMD setup deliver that?

bgadmin, I hope you know that this is a user forum and we seldom see any AMD employees here. Please vent your displeasure here. Request an RMA here. I do agree with most of what you are saying but will also say that I have never had a Ryzen processor fail on me and I have been building with them since the first announcement (1800X). What vendor did you get your OS? Who was the seller at Amazon? Please check here to see it your processor is authentic. We have seen cases reported of bootleg processors. I answer yes to both questions at the bottom of your post, it has for me. All of my problems have been MB vendor and once memory. One vendor kept repairing my MB and returning it to me until they severely damaged a memory slot, then I got a new MB and all was and is well. John.

Well, I'm not trying to sell my Point of view. As an IT myself, system admin at a big retail, all we have is Intel and they die the same way, sometimes with no warning, including some DoA. So i'm a bit neutral when such occurrences happen.

Had one AMD CPU problem, an AthlonXP and that was it. My opinion remains and AMD CPUs ran super nicely over the years, some even being pushed far beyond its limits as OC is concerned.

I mean, just look at what the global community says, as far as CPU making goes, AMD is the pinnacle at the moment.

Easier to read and keep focus. Long non spaced text is confusing.

Continuous text is something to avoid at all times, gets boring. This is a common corporate pratice in long emails, internal posting and every piece of communication.

Its pretty much standard where I work.

Have you tried reseating the CPU? Also try just one stick of mem in all 4 slots..

Place GPU in a different slot or use the onboard as a test.

i’m experiencing the same problem. Mine worked for 6 days. I have the same MOBO too. 

was working perfectly. A bit hotter than yours while developing on Unreal Engine, one day i shut it off and next day won’t start. Initially my MOBO reported code 15 with the red and amber light (cpu/dram fail) and would not do anything at all. Tried everything.. flashing the bios did not work either.. and from this morning the code is 00 (cpu not detected). 

i thought the problem was on the motherboard as everything was working properly and suddenly  it didn’t but your post makes me think there’s a problem with the CPU.

I did everything i can with my motherboard (FLashed it, CMOS it) and the CPU still fails, so i don't think there's anything else i can do to try. So yes.. i tried everything i can.

I don't have another mobo with me, so i can't try if it would work on another one.

I would advise the same as I did before.

Inspect carefully the slot for bent pins. Get a new CMOS battery, power cycle it if you didnt.

You can redo all cabling, ATX 24 and CPU aux, there are some cables that, for some reason, the pin retracts and wont make proper contact.

 Gnrcat, thank you for not adding many unneeded and usefulness spaces in your reply. We do not know what parts you have so it is hard to even guess what is going on. The two of you have one thing in common we know about, MB. You have different post codes so perhaps different problems. Post all your parts. John.

I know what could have happened: memory refresh timings were low or close to a limit between unstability and stability, so the computer may work for a while, but it compromises the BIOS by corrupting it as well, it would then be good to try update with that procedure that does not require a processor and memory. This problem is more common than you might think and is silent, but the new BIOSes are more sensitive as they are a much more sophisticated type of software. To overcome the problem, you will have to increase some timings a little or add more electrical voltage and other timings can also affect stability. Another problem that can occur when assembling a machine is the bad connection of the power supply connectors, which can cause the machine to turn off for the slightest reason.

The updates that occur in these BIOSes can also make the DDR5 memories unstable, I have a pair that simply doesn't work in certain versions and in others it has great performance, it's been a roller coaster.

Let me state again, none of the components is customized or attempted to be OCed.

It's the motherboard, goes for RMA and I'm waiting for my new one. Different brand and model.

Hope to share good news soon, unfortunately, because of my location this will take time.

These BIOS instability and memory corruption are independent of increasing the clocks, even JEDEC default values ​​can end up unstable, but this should not happen. I also had serious problems with my 7950x and total instability with the memory in a new BIOS version while in the previous one I was able to perform well. There must be a series of factors that cause this, mainly because the Memory Controllers between Intel and AMD are different, so an EXPO product will be better than one just XMP from Intel, in my case my memories are just XMP.

What can be done is to complain to the memory and motherboard manufacturer so that they can resolve this. Even though your memory could only be Intel XMP, you can still ask for DDR5 memory manufacturer support. This is because these memories should not present these instabilities and support is lifelong for many of them. Memory support can test an improved fit with the motherboard manufacturer to try to resolve the issue.

Created an account just to reply to this thread. My 9950X has issues too. The fTPM stopped working on it and I tried numerous solutions, nothing worked. Sent it in for RMA from Canada to Florida since 23rd October. Got an email saying they received it but nothing after that. I had to email them myself asking for an update and they said it's out of stock. I am stuck waiting for it and they said they have no ETA either when I asked for it. Several weeks, dead PC, and I am stuck in a limbo.
