My Radeon VII does not give an framerate enhancement with MacBookPro thunderbolt and Catalina. Do I need special instructions or additional software? Do I need special instructions to the system?
AMD does not support Apple, only Apple does. I would suggest you talk to Apple support about your issue or seek an Apple forum. You could also contact the support department for your flight simulator for advice as well.
thank you very much dor your feedback.
Hi friends,
I write this in English, since I send this message also to native
English speakers.
I tested my new XFX AMD Radeon VII 16GB HBM2, 1750 MHz Boost, 1801 MHz
Peak, 3xDP 1xHDMI Pci-E 3.0

in a Razer Core X Chroma: Thunderbolt 3 Externes Grafikkarten Gehäuse
(Egpu) (für Windows 10 und Mac, Externe Grafik-Lösung für Laptops mit
RGB Chroma Beleuchtung)

I tested this with different air planes in the flight simulator X-Plane
(Austin Meyer) under Mac Version. In all cases the eGPU was active (see
figures).
Test was done with a MacBook Pro 16 Zoll with 4 thunderbolt ports. Port
1 was connected with the Razer Core X Chroma.
1. FlightFactor A320 in XP 11.41 works with poor frame rates (see figures)
2. Laminar B738 in XP 11.41 also limited frame rates (see figure)
3. FlightFactor A320 in XP 11.50ß does not work
4. Laminar B738 in XP 11.50ß (Vulkan/Metal) gives excellent frame rates,
also with highest adjustment of the graphics (see figure)
The import point is that the eGPU Radeon VII ( 16 GB VRAM) gives no
better frame rates in all cases than the internal Graphic card (AMD
Radeon 5500M 8 GB VRAM). The only advantage is that I could plug in 3
external monitors and additional USBs, sine the eGPU has a high Watt
capacity. Furthermore the akku of the MacBook Pro 16 Zoll in contrat to
the normal power supply always keeps at 100 %. With regular Apple power
supply and operation of the flight simulator over several hours the akku
decreases continously down to 20 %.
For me it is astonishing that the internal graphic card, which I tested
without the eGPU Radeon VII gives in my flight simulator the same frame
rates compared to the eGPU. May be that the situation is different in
other games or FinalCut Professional. The newest ß-Version of X-plane
(Austin Meyer) uses Vulkan/Metal, which dramatically improves the frame
rates up till 50 and even more also with the very high adjustment of the
graphics (number of world objects = Maximum).
I could only imagine that this eGPU Radeon VII is not optimal for the
special programm X-Plane. My be that other games cooperate better with
this external garaphic card.
Has somebody additional condiderations?
All the best
Horst Grunz
Again AMD does not support your product APPLE DOES. I can understand your question but have no answer as only Apple could answer.
I would try an Apple based forum and hopefully an Apple user may be able to offer advice.
