Strange Idle Power behavior - Driver bug?

Hey there,

just noticed something awkward with my new RX6750 XT:

The card idles at 7 Watt. As soon as I start playing a youtube video that is 1080p or higher, consumption raises to around 33 Watt.

Now for my strange observation:

  • When the video is paused, consumption stays at 33w as long as the video frame stays on screen. Meaning: As soon as I either overlay the video (completely) with a different window or simply scroll it out of view, power drops back to 7 Watts.
  • Bringing the video back on screen after that does not raise power to 33 Watts again.
  • It will spike up to 33 Watts again as soon as I hover the video with my mouse or start playback again. Even just hovering the video for a few milliseconds will permanently bring power consumption back to 30+ Watt.

Any explanation for that? Thank you!

The behavior you report has to do with how Windows handles application focus and resource scheduling. Even when an app is minimized in some cases it can still cause higher utilization than if you simply close the app.
