Hey Everyone,

Recently I built a new rig (and used my previous R9 390 Graphics Card).

New System is:

-Asus TUF 270 mk.2 Motherboard

-16 GB Ram

- Windows 10

- Kaby Lake i7-7700k Processor

- Xfx R9 390 (8GB) Graphics Card

My Problem is, on my old rig (old Asus with AMD A8-5500 Processor), I could play games and watch youtube at 720p and the fans would RARELY kick on.....  Not sure I ever really heard them unless I opened the case...  On this new unit, I get the fans kicking on on my R9 watching youtube in 240p and 360p....

Any thoughts?  If I can't get it figured out, I may go over to an GTX 1070 card, but I don't want to go off my R9 if it's an issue I can address somehow....  Let me know if anyone has any helpful info...  I'm not the most computer knowledgeable person so if I left out any useful info, let me know....

do you have enough Case-Fans installed?
did you use correct (or working) Fanspeed-settings in Wattman or Afterburner?

btw - have in mind that your CPU is VERY hot - and if your CPU-cooler isnt pulling the hot air out and your case is small it will heat up pretty fast - so that when the GPU has some load it will need to spin the fans
but that usually only happens in mitx setups

Airflow is fine, and processor is cool...

Two intake case fans, and 1 exhaust. My i7-7700k is running at 34 -

35 °C (Max is about 48°C)...

When I close all programs and just leave my PC idle for a while with

nothing moving on the screen, after time the GPU drops down and idles

at about 45 - 50°C.

The moment I load anything the temp starts to climb pretty fast

(wacthing a 360p video the temp climbs about 1° every 2 sec of so)

Fans kick on and work like they should in Afterburner (doesn't

overheat thankfully)...

From that regard I don't really have a "problem", but on the last rig,

these fans would only kick on while gaming.. Now they kick on while

doing just about anything but idle. Its annoying for them to kick on

every 2 - 4 minutes for 30 sec. just watching a low res youtube

video... I only ask because I used this card for months on the old

rig with this never happening that I can remember... Is this just

something I have to get used to?

pls clean your GPU-cooler
also considereing buying thermal-compound (non conductive - specially for GPUs) - because yours could be sticky/solid/bad by now

is your YT video in 4k? do you have 2 screens? does your browser still use HW-decoder?

Recently airgunned out the GPU (did not disassemble).

Running Youtube in 360p resolution (my internet connection sucks and

480p videos have buffing breaks, so I tend to watch most everything in

360p... )

How would I check to see if I am using the HW-decoder? My Browser is

an up to date version of Firefox....

(Thanks for you help and suggestions on this, btw).

make sure you use HTML5 Player and not FlashPlayer (so uninstall Flash)

what temp does your GPU have while gaming?

I will do so when I get back home, and let you know what I find...

For gaming, typically it will start off with a GPU temp of about 45 -

50°C (idle temp) and once the game starts with moving images on the

screen, the temp climbs at about 1° every sec or two (just like with

low res youtube vids) and climb until about 85°C (where I have my MSI

Afterburner set to kick on the fans at 100%), then fans kick on like

they should and heat will drop back to about 45 - 50°C then start the

cycle all over again.... Fans cycle every couple minutes...

(Note: I have afterburner set with a fan curve of fans @ 65% from 35°

- 70°C, then it rams to 80% fans from 71° - 85°, then 100% fans

from 85° - MAX) - _not sure if this info helps as all, but here it is

anyway...._

I know this is within AMD's stated usage range for the card (with

94°C being temp. max), so in that regard it seems to be fine, but my

main concern is with low res youtube videos and how quick the temp

climbs with just simple low res video running....

My computer is hooked up to a 1080p 3D TV, so I never have a res.

better than 1080p (I play most things in 1600 x 900 for better

frames), but this quick heating and cooling cycle is happening with

360p youtube videos (just like with higher res games).... My issue is

all about how this fan cycling never really happened on the last

system UNLESS I was playing games.... Now I get it pretty much

anytime the screen has moving images....

I don't know if this is just the way it's going to be from now on, or

if something is going (gone) wrong....

(All drivers are up to date)

repeat MSI Afterburner fan-settings: 65% fanspeed between 35°C-70°C?
that is your problem - your GPU bios would start fans usually at 50-55°C if it supports fan-stop

0°C-55°C = 0-25% fanspeed (25% should be inaudible)
55°C-75°C = 66% fanspeed
75-83°C = 85% fanspeed
+83°C = 100% fanspeed

or you could uninstall MSI Afterburner and let your GPU bios do the trick

I was using the card's default settings before I installed

Afterburner... This was happening before Afterburner and when I made

the custom curve with more extreme fan settings...

The only real difference was that the card ran a hotter avg. temp.

while idling. I extended the 65% fan speed to lower temps to help

increase the amount of time it takes for the GPU to heat back up

again...

Since below about 70% the fans are mostly silent, I just put them to

65% from at all temps below 70°C (I'd rather them run than not if

they are mostly silent...) in hopes that again, it would buy some more

time between "cooling cycles".

It's just getting annoying to listen to the fans cycle every few

minutes when I never really had to before....

so its still your thermal compound or your airflow
it is highly unlikely a driver problem

It's definitely not an airflow problem. I can take the case sides off

and nothing changes (besides it being louder)....

Plenty of room and fans... I'm not sure how the Thermal compound

would be the problem, since it wasn't a problem in the last PC case

(which by the way, had even less airflow), but I will take apart

tonight, and re-apply new Thermal and let you know what (if anything)

it does.... I don't suspect it will do much, but I guess since I

can't think of anything else, it's worth a shot.....

I agree, I don't think it's a driver issue now... Over the weekend I

updated to the newest drivers and NOTHING changed in regards to this

issue.

If you have turned off hardware acceleration in browsers, it may possibly be a conflict with wattman/afterburner.

I have wattman disabled for my 390. The vbios fan control does it's job fine.

Okay....

While I appreciate your advice, I think I am just at a dead end...

Pulled the card apart, and the thermal paste was fine... Cleaned it

off and replaced it with fresh, no difference.

Put some passive heatsinks on the backplate and it's buying me a few

extra minutes per fan cycle. I guess I will have to tolerate this

noisy card until I get a new card...

I use this PC strictly for Youtube and Gaming (+VR), I don't do any

"data mining"... Any Suggestions on a solid and reasonably priced

card? I have a 850W power supply, so I can power most single cards

without issue... Will that power a RX Vega 56? I see that card looks

to be pretty nice, and I can choke down $400 if it's a solid card that

will last with some growth room.... Thoughts?

dane - you can try a clean win10 install with latest drivers

but i think dont think it is a software problem - maybe also try a different browser

btw opening the case can increase heat compared to a good airflow in the case

I just changed over to HTML5 video as you suggested, and I just tested

it out... No real difference..

I appreciate your attention to my issue.... But since everything is

looking as good as it's going to get, I guess it's just the way it is

from now on (until a new card is bought)...
