Asus xq27aqm overclocking doesn't work with 7900xtx

Hey,

I have an ASUS xq27aqm monitor which has a native 240hz frequency but can be overclocked to 270hz as there's such an option provided in the OSD. I was doing the overclocking properly with my old nvidia RTX 2070 graphic card using a displayport cable. This week I received my 7900 xtx and after replacing the 2070 with it, I found the overclocking doesnt work anymore. It will just stays at 240hz.

I tried everything I can think of like upgrading all drivers to the latest including monitor and 7900 xtx, using a different cable,  reinstall operating system. None of them works.

Is this a known issue or has anyone seen this on other monitors?

Yes AMD fixed the issue. After upgrading the driver of my 7900XTX to 23.2.2, I am able to overclock the monitor to 270hz.

contacted asus support it looks like xq27aqm overclocking doesnt work with amd gpu as it's more or less a nvidia monitor

This is not true, I had a 6900 XT and was able to run this monitor at 270Hz, now I have a 7900xtx and the overclock stopped working, I can only set my monitor to 240Hz, maybe a DP 2.1 issue.

Its a G-Sync monitor... if the OC feature requires you to enable G-Sync then you are out of luck...

Which is why I'd only buy a Freesync monitor because it works with both AMD and nVidia GPUs, I see no point in buying a Gsync monitor and locking myself into the nVidia walled-garden ecosystem. IF I enjoy or want to be locked in such a system, I might as well buy an iPhone as well and be locked into everything Apple. Proud Android user if that's not clear enough.

I have the same issue, it seems that the DP 2.1 is the issue. The screen works fine at 270Hz with any GPU that have a DP 1.4, I tested a 4090, 6950XT, 6900XT, all work fine at 270Hz.
Next step is to try to use a DP 2.1 cable.

I haven't seen any DP 2.1 cable around, at least the last time I'd looked that is. Do let us know how it works out, I'm kinda curious as to whether upgrading the cable would resolve the problem, or both the DP output on the card and the monitor have to be DP1.4, in which case you're so outta luck.

You buy a very powerful gfx card but the power is not enough?

It isn't a question of power, there's nothing about that here, it's a question of compatibility.....DP 1.4 and DP2.1 on his monitor. DP1.4 doesn't seem to work, so he's hoping DP2.1 would be the solution. I hope I don't have any issue as well as all my DP cables are 1.4

I just tested a new DP 2.1 cable, same result. I have a case with ASUS to help figure out the issue, I will open one with AMD, maybe a driver issue. I hope that this incompatibility with Overclocking will be solved soon.

That sux, I hope your issue can be resolved soon. This is one of the reasons why I'd refused to buy any monitor that is G-sync, I don't want to be obliged to nVidia and buying only nVidia related gear. Regardless, do let us know whether this issue can be resolved, one way or another.

I have the same monitor and the 7900 xtx and i have the same issue! hopefully AMD roll out an update soon. i can only hit 240hz atm,

please let us know what you find out with asus and amd. This issue sounds like something can be fixed by driver rollout in the future.

I have the exact same monitor and graphics card (rx7900xtx). Same issue here. Limited to 240hz no matter what I try, changing dp cable, using HDMI (limits to 144hz), switching dp ports, resetting my monitor to factory. None of these solutions work.

It might really be a driver issue. Please let me know what you find!

Here is the verdict, Asus transferred my case to AMD, and after some back and forth they asked me to submit a bug report. Here is what they told me at the end:

“ Thank you for the response and submitting report.
I see that you have same issue with both 22.12.1 and 22.12.2 drivers.
Our driver team will investigate the user reported issues based on priority and work on it. I request you to wait for future driver updates and check the status.
Thank you for contacting AMD. “

So we have to sit and wait for a driver update and hope that that one fix that issue!

I have a VG258QM (https://www.asus.com/displays-desktops/monitors/tuf-gaming/tuf-gaming-vg258qm/) and I have the same issue, only shows 240 Hz, then after a driver reinstall I can only do 144Hz. Definitely a driver issue, will submit a bug report because I don't know how long it is before they actually fix this.

Not trying to be a creep about this, and it isn't my intention to offend, I'm just curious:

Does it really matter that instead of 270Hz overclocked, why isn't 240Hz enough? My Samsung Freesync 2 monitor does 120Hz and 144Hz, honestly, I can't see the difference between them myself, ofc, my being older with glasses doesn't exactly make me eagle-eyed.

Because if I paid for a monitor that works at (in my case) 280Hz then I want to use it at 280Hz?

When I first used my 7900XTX and I was playing Apex at 240 FPS I immediately noticed the difference.

Just because some people can't notice it doesn't mean other don't, and definitely shouldn't settle for anything less.

I am using the same DP cable from my previous 3080Ti and tested the monitor with various 6000 series cards and they all work fine.

Okay, Okay, I understand you want to get your money's worth, not questioning that. But wow, you can notice a difference at 240Hz is just amazing, pretty glad I don't have eyes like yours for sure. I'm contented with my Pleb 144Hz...and 75Hz on my older monitor.

Yeah aftetr using 240Hz/280Hz, 144Hz was immediately unusable for me. I can notice screen tears easily when going back to 144Hz. The difference from 280 to 240 was not quite as bad, but definitely noticeable.

I am a competitive FPS gamer so maybe that's why I notice it more than others.

In competitive gaming some people could tell the difference.

Imagine you bought a car that have 7 seat but there a manufacturer defect that make 1 unusable, will you just say that 6 is ok or try to have them fix it? It’s all about getting what you paid for.

Have you tried forcing the refresh rate?

It can be done thru windows and/or Adrenalin.

Again, your monitor has a GSync module and nvidia sure is a soccer mom regarding their tech. It could be messing with something and thus not allowing you to push the refresh rate.. IDK.
But if the monitor has the capability it should handle a custom resolutions.

My RoG monitor is not overclockable but it is. I can go from 144 to 150 or 160.

johnnyenglish_1-1674392981114.png

Just be careful with the values, but even so the monitor would just black out and not accept it.
If something goes bad reboot in safe mode.

Final statement and I have to write this, do it at your own risk.

I and others have tried and it doesn't work. Even if the monitor is "GSYNC" that doesn't explain why it works with previous 6000 series AMD cards. It's most probable that it is a driver issue with the 7000 series cards.

I hope you're reported this issue/bug with the AMD reporting tool, just hope that enough peeps with the issue have reported it so that they'd take a stab at resolving it.

I've also shot AMD support an email about the issue to get their attention. Also linked the thread here for them.

Let's all do this so they can act on a fix quickly!!

Yes, report the bug or issue so that AMD has an idea that this is an issue. Whenever I'd had any issue, mostly performance in games, though the last one involve black screen with a YT playback on Chrome. When the Report tool pops up, I'd be furiously typing away with relevant info and when it crashed. If you don't report it, AMD won't know and won't get around to fixing it.

IF AMD is aware, be a little patient, they'd get a fix sooner or later, that has been my experience through years of using ATi/AMD hardware, and nVidia's as well.

I'm curious, what had changed to get 270Hz?

The monitor has two options when overclocking the refresh rate, 270 and 280. I've genuinely never tried 270 just 280 as that's what I had always used. Out of curiosity just remembered that 270 was an option when fiddling with my monitor today and the XTX works at 270.

Just got a reply from AMD stating their engineers are aware of this issue. Here's their email reply

Response and Service Request History:

Thank you for reporting this issue to us.

I have checked internally and found that our engineers are aware about this issue and are currently investigating.

I request you to wait for the future driver releases and keep an eye on the Fixed Issues in the driver release notes if the issue is reproduced and fixed by our engineers.

Thanks for contacting AMD.

How you doing buddy. I am having the same issue here. My xq27aqm just got delivered today. I am using a 7900xt. The overclock function does not get set to 270hz. Is this problem going anywhere to be solved?

AMD said their engineers are aware but it wouldn't hurt if you make a report to hasten things. the more reports they receive the quicker they might get to fixing the issue.
