Xubuntu 18.10 youtube video issues

I'm currently running Xubuntu 18.10 with amdgpu driver, RX580 AMD reference card.  Video playback is really poor.  In Parole media player, many videos don't play at all.  Youtube and other video in Firefox plays back, but video stutters, looks like frames are dropping (audio is fine).  Video playback in vlc is OK, though.

Stuttering in Firefox/Youtube is definitely software related.  Same machine running Win10 and AMD 19.1.1 plays fine.

I understand amd proprietary driver cannot be used with (X)ubuntu 18.10.  Is there any other solution?

Small update - the Parole playback issue is due to improper detection of the proper video output mode.  When manually selecting the mode with "-xv" parameter, Parole plays OK.  Also, jerky video seems to be a bigger problem in Firefox, than playing the same content in Chrome.
