Hello, a couple of days ago, windows updates automatically installed a new AMD display driver on my laptop. Since then, the "Select Text" mouse pointer (which is the pointer that shows up when you hover over text) has been showing up as being white colored even when hovering over black text with a white background, which makes it very hard to tell where the mouse pointer is located at. However, if I move the mouse pointer a bit (while hovering over black text) and also just do a left click, the Text Select pointer goes back to being black colored.
Notes:
If you review the link above I have tested it on dozens of older chromium/chrome versions and they all have had the issue. It appears to be related to the way AMD's drivers/hardware handles Windows MPO (Multi-Plane Overlay), because when that is disabled the issue does not occur. This has been occurring for years... longest-lived bug ever Lol, feels that way anyway
yow man I also have the RX 6750 XT, just got mine fixed and here's how I did it:
Windows Key + R then Open systempropertiesperformance.exe
For an easy fix just click on Adjust for Best Appearance down on the Visual Effects
the main problem in regards to mouse pointers and their colors messing up is when the "Show Shadows under the mouse pointer" is disabled.
let me know if this fixes your problem
I have the same issue on 2 devices that both have AMD GPUs and are running Windows 11. I fixed the issue before with the MPO disable but I have reinstalled Windows since then so I will have to redo that today.
PC 1: 5600X in MSI B450 with 6700XT running Windows 11
PC 2: 3600XT in MSI B550 (issue previously also occurred with Asus ROG B350) with 6600XT running Windows 11
Reading other threads about this problem, the common factor is either AMD CPU or AMD Graphics. I have AMD CPU+GPU. Someone had an AMD APU. Someone had an AMD APU with an NVIDIA GPU. Either it's CPU, or that person has their display hooked up to the motherboard and iGPU and maybe uses the GPU for specific programs.
I just had a big realization moment. I have dark mode on my PC and on Chrome. The text cursor is supposed to be black when the background is white and the text is black. It's supposed it be white when the background is black and the text is white. On websites with dark mode, my cursor is white so I can see it, on websites such as Google Docs, it seems like some system on the computer isn't realizing that even though the text in the URL bar of Chrome is white because I have dark mode, Google Docs has a white background with black text and needs a black cursor. Something isn't defining this when MPO is enabled but when disabled my cursor does what it's supposed to, white over the URL bar and on sites with dark mode and black on sites that have light mode such as Google Docs or this forum.
I have found somebody with an Intel i7-12700K and an AMD RX 6800 XT. This tells us for sure it's an AMD GPU issue and not a CPU issue. Maybe now we can have some more leverage.
@NicholasFlamy Is this issue exclusive to Darkmode?
I have an AMD CPU with integrated graphics and it has the same issue.
I think so.
Why haven't they fixed this error yet? I have replaced 3 VGA cards, hard drives and ram but it still doesn't work. and it was only completely normal when I installed version 22.1.2 , Please fix it AMD
The issue is still happening.
Found temporary fix in a Reddit post: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/5157/~/after-updating-to-nvidia-game-ready-drive...
It is for NVIDIA GPUs but working for AMD too. Another temporary fix is to disable Hardware Acceleration.
It's 2025, and I’m still facing this issue across all my AMD computers, both at work and at home.
As a fan of AMD products, I take pride in defending the brand and often place large orders for our company. However, situations like this make it difficult—especially when colleagues criticize me, calling me biased or blind to the flaws.
The issue persists with a white text cursor on a white background, regardless of the Windows version, driver updates, or CPU model. Every AMD system I use seems to share the same problem.
And the problem is reported at 2022 and only community (Unclean) solutions! I can't do REG trick on every single system and user in a whole organization.
Might you be able to contact their enterprise/business support and put a fire under their butts?
Try to set al custom mouse icon and disable inverting to background might do the trick as well.
It sounds like the new AMD display driver is causing an issue with the "Select Text" mouse pointer. This could be a bug introduced by the driver or an incompatibility with Windows 11. You could try the following steps to resolve it:
Update or Rollback the Driver: Check if there’s a newer driver version available that might fix the issue, or consider rolling back to the previous version if it worked fine before.
Adjust Pointer Settings: Go to Settings > Devices > Mouse > Additional Mouse Options, and check if you can adjust the settings for pointer color or size to see if it resolves the issue.
Reset Graphics Settings: If using AMD's Radeon Software, try resetting the graphics settings or tweaking any pointer-related options available in the software.
Try a System Restore: If the issue started recently, you could also try performing a system restore to a point before the driver was installed.
If none of these work, contacting AMD support or checking for any known bugs with that driver version might be the next step.
