Stuttering issues with driver 24.6.1 (killing FPS)

After installing the latest version of AMD drivers, my recent games (Darktide, Overwatch 2, CS2) are experiencing random stutters, like the game is dying to process something, which kills the FPS significantly, and goes back to normal seconds after. In Darktide is completely unplayable because it goes through the whole game, meanwhile other FPS games is just for a few seconds and takes a while to experience again the issues.

Same. I’ve noticed this with the Riven remake that just came out, previously I was using last month’s drivers and the game was fine. After I updated there were severe stuttering in most areas of the game. I even tried a clean install by using the clean up utility and also cleared the cache. I eventually had to revert to June’s drivers and it was perfect again.

Fortnite is completely unplayable using my z690/12700k/xfx 6900xt build on this new driver. I did a full ddu wipe and am now looking to find last months drivers... This is the first update to make a game unplayable and ive been running amd gpus since the rx480..

Necro'ing this post because my post is being 'marked as spam' as soon as I post it, despite for 3 days telling moderators it's clearly not spam and a genuine issue affecting thousands of 6000-Series GPU's. It's like they'd rather ignore people's issues than trying to help them fix thim. This is a support forum, no? The amount of support actually given would suggest otherwise.

Hello all,

specs:

I have been experiences frequent crashes and stutters in Call of Duty titles such as MW3 and Cold War on every single latest driver since I bought the card. The newer drivers do improve performance and fix glitchy textures on reflective surfaces, but always eventually result in the same crash.

The latest driver which seems to not cause crashes is 23.30.01.02. (AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition Preview Driver for AMD Fluid Motion Frames Release Notes).

I don't know whether this is an issue solely on the 6950XT, but I never experienced this crash with my 3070 before I switched, and I've changed nearly every component for testing. The only common variable upon each crash is using drivers later than the one I've mentioned.

Additionally, I've used ChatGPT and WinDBG to debug this issue from the minidump file created upon crash by the game. The contents surrounding the crash are below:

ChatGPT analysis:

The provided crash dump analysis indicates that the application "BlackOpsColdWar.exe" encountered an access violation error. Here's a breakdown of the key points:

  1. Exception Code: c0000005 - This indicates an access violation, which occurs when the program tries to read or write to an invalid memory location.

  2. Exception Address: 00007ff6b2f09dc0 - This is the memory address where the access violation occurred, specifically in the function BlackOpsColdWar!sprintf+0x86a420.

  3. Read Address: 0000032344683170 - This is the memory address the program attempted to read, which is invalid or inaccessible.

  4. Register State:

    • rax=0000000000000000
    • rcx=0000032344681cc0
    • rdx=0000000000000000
    • rsi=000003234468316c
    • rdi=0000032344681cc0
    • rip=00007ff6b2f09dc0 (instruction pointer at the time of the crash)

Any input on whether there's something I need to do to prevent this crash on the latest drivers would be appreciated, and if you need any additional information I am happy to provide it.  I don't have enough storage for a dual-boot setup, and it's frustrating having tanked performance on other games just because Call of Duty doesn't want to play ball with the latest drivers on my PC.

Yep, same here.
Cyberpunk 2077 (all patches and DLCs) gets random stutters every minute or so, but gets super bad when there's a phone call or a text to answer.

Ghosts of Tsushima was less obvious, but it's there.

And generally, FPS seems and feels a bit lower.

Reverting back to previous driver eliminates the problem.

I had the same issue with driver version 24.6.1, and rolling back to version 24.5.1 fixed it. I also decided to skip the latest Windows 11 23H2 cumulative preview update to avoid more problems. However, even without the Windows update, the stuttering in most games persists when using the 24.6.1 driver.

The issue is not the usual brief shader compilation hitches in games after installing/updating a display driver but persistent and non-stop stuttering in most games I tested.

Even driver 24.6.1 causes this stuttering in The First Descendant despite being its game-ready driver, and 24.5.1 solves it.

BTW, I always use AMD Cleanup Utility/DDU before installing or upgrading to any chosen driver version and perform a clean and Minimal driver install.

Same with me, using the "hacker-vision" in Cyberpunk (holding tab to scan stuff) would stutter the game EVERY time, so I downgraded to 24.5.1. I would go farther back, to something from last year but I don't want to lose support for Ghost of Tsushima (pre-January would give me back Fallout 3/NV support, for example).

Hi, same for me on Overwatch2. I’m downgrading to 24.5.1 that works fine for me… 5800x3d and 6950xt

I confirm it’s a driver issue. No issue after rolling back to the previous version

me too.. i'm hating this situation!

Update: I've rolled back to previous version (24.5.1) as a temporary solution. I also reported this to AMD bug report, hopefully they will find the source of the problem and fix it.

how do you rolled back?

I uninstalled the driver with DDU and downloaded 24.5.1 again.

AMD are taking their time that's for sure, FC 24 running bad still

exactly!! ea fc 24 becomes a s*h*it in the menù, in the gameplay, everywhere!!

I played Valorant after a long time yesterday and was wondering why I am facing so much stuttering randomly. Turns out it was actually driver issue. 24.5.1 seems to be working fine. Hope AMD resolves this soon.

It seems that RX 6xxx GPUs in particular are affected by this problem!!!

But I have read a few times that uninstalling and reinstalling 24.6.1 helped some people with the stuttering problems!!

>> I advise the standard customer not to try such experiments

If you don't want to get annoyed, just install 24.5.1 & ESPECIALLY DO NOT install the optional Windows11 24H2 update!!!

The last update for 23h2 has already caused problems for too many people, or rather, has led to performance losses for too many!!! I would bet that the heroes of Micronoob are to blame for the third time in the last 8 months with an Up... ehh Bugdate, which is why gamers have to deal with extreme stuttering problems 🤮🤬

If 24.4.1 didn't cause you any problems, I recommend installing this driver for performance reasons!

>Except for Pubg , you should have up to +-5% higher FPS and above all between 5-10% higher 1%Low...
>in Pubg it's unfortunately the other way around 🤯

==> Always make sure that you are using the LATEST version of the AMD cleanup utility or DDU (display driver uninstaller)!!!!
==> Is your OS fairly up to date? -->
==> Have you installed the latest chipset driver?!

And out of pure curiosity, I have another question for ALL of you! ;-D

Which manufacturers do you have for your graphics cards and how much RAM at what clock speed? How many monitors & how many Hz?

What resolution do you play at? --> Native or with FSR?

If native: Which graphics settings do you have activated?
--> Sharpening, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering...?
--> AntiLag (if so, average GPU usage), Boost, FreeSync...?

Do you stream or record while playing (with which software)?

Aaaand... Sorry for the many questions....

Have you checked whether all your devices are using the right interrupt mode?

My OS is always uptaded
my chipset drivers is always updated
i always use native resolution
to try to game fine, after this issues, i set the setting on Predefinite
i don't stream while i playing

Update 2: Downloaded newest driver version 24.7.1 and the issue seems to be fixed on Darktide and CS2, but still present on Overwatch. Cyberpunk seems to be OK. However, I read some other threads of people still complaining about the issue in other games, so the driver is not 100% right yet. I'll be on this driver for a while if I get more games having performance problems.

Hi, tried in Overwatch with 24.7.1, ok for me. 270 fps on a 240 hz monitor, stable as before the 24.6.1. Have u tried ddu and the a clean 7.1 install?

Is your motherboard's BIOS up to date?

Do you have the latest AM4 chipset drivers installed from AMD.com?

Might help , might not .. good to do regardless

You may have mentioned this somewhere, but will you go into your bios and tell me what your iGPU setting show?  Your issues lead me to believe that at some point during one of your attempted driver updates, a graphics driver for iGPU was installed due to the iGPU setting being either set to auto or enabled at one point.  This would explain why your system I behaving erraticly with respect to graphical performance.  The only way to fix it would be to wipe pretty much everything other than your bios and redownload drivers after you’ve ensured that iGPU is disabled.

Does a yellow triangle saying “device requires further installation” in PCI device manager sound familiar to you at any point?
