FPS drops and Stutters - League of Legends

Hi all,

I have really struggled with trying to figure out why I am getting FPS drops and stuttering when playing League of Legends and now with basic web browsing. I have gone through a lot of troubleshooting steps and searched lots of forums but none have seen to work. This issue seems to happen when the screen is moving quickly and in fights when I am in game. When outside of gaming, something as simple as clicking the Youtube video or changing something quickly will cause my computer to slow to a halt for a few seconds. However, I do not see any of these frame drops in other games that are more demanding for instance Forza Horizon 5.

My specs are listed below along with the steps tried.

Hardware

  • CPU: R5 5600x
  • GPU: Gigabyte 6750xt
  • Monitor: ASRock Phantom Gaming 34" 3440 x 1440 165hz
  • Motherboard: Rog Strix B550 Gaming-F
  • RAM: G.SKILL Trident Z RGB Series (8gb) x 4 = 32gbs
  • SSD: 1TB Samsung
  • HDD: 1TB Seagate
  • PSU: Corsair SF850
  • CPU Cooler: AIO ID-COOLING FROSTFLOW X 240

Steps Tried

  • Removed GPU drivers using DDU.
  • Updated all drivers for all hardware by downloading GPU and Motherboard drivers directly from webpages. Double-checked using DriverEasy to make sure all other drivers were current.
  • Fresh windows install about 3 - months ago.
  • Re-installed League of Legends.
  • Turned on FreeSync and turned off FreeSync. As well as other features in Adrenaline.
  • Removed Adrenaline and did drivers only install.
  • Cleaned the PC.
  • Verified temps after using 3Dmark and CPU-Z.
  • Set all Bios options to auto and made sure no overclocking was running.
  • Turned of Windows Gaming Mode.
  • Ran virus scans.

I am sure I am forgetting some steps as I have been troubleshooting this for over a year. But, if anyone has any suggestions, please send them my way!

Can you try to downgrade to driver version 24.8.1 or 24.5.1 or try to disable hardware accelerated GPU scheduling or try to disable SAM or try to disable MPO?

Hi, thank you for the response! After double-checking and following your recommended steps it looks like its a bit of the same, unfortunately. I should also state I did not install Adrenaline this time and only installed the driver.

I tested it a couple of ways all done within League of Legends with settings at Medium-High. I have always ran at High but figured I would test with lower settings to reduce some of the labor on the card.

  1. The first test being I uncapped my framerate, which my frames jumped all over from 300s to 580s. This obviously caused major stuttering issues.
  2. I then tested the game with the frames capped at 144 since my monitor is 165hz I assumed it that uncapped would have some stutters. This cleaned it up a bit but when actions were being made such as moving quickly or fighting another enemy the frames would drop to the low 100s and sometimes even more down to the 70s.
  3. Finally I tried playing with V-Sync on and FreeSync off on my monitor. This seemed to clean up the gameplay a lot and locking in my frames around 165. However, once again in combat or in quick movements the frames would drop and cause stuttering again around 140 and jump back up.

You may have already done this, but make sure to update your bios to the latest version if you haven't done so.
I had similar issues with my cpu (same as yours r5 5600x) ,and updating my bios version to the latest did me wonders. There was some talk about multiple instability issues with Ryzen 5 series cpus , mostly fixed after multiple bios updates.
Also, your GPU driver is kinda meh , update to the latest and see what happens, i was on 24.5.1 and updating to 24.12.1 was a better experience

Finally, so we can solve this problem for good (in case non of the previous steps solve anything), i assume that LOL uses DX11 isn't it, then we may try to replace dxnavi DX11 drivers with the legacy ones using AnWave tools:
https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/anwave-2024-amd-radeon-software-customize-setup-advanced-cleanup-u...

This is the best way to solve all DX11 problems (As it did with mine especially with UE games) and achieve the best stability , it only works on RDNA2 cards and below, so your card is compatible.

Hope that solves your problem, Best of luck
