Ryzen 8700G / Radeon 780M driver crash after upgrade to 96GB RAM

Hi.

When i run my Asrock X600 Mini with AMD Ryzen 7 8700G and 48GB RAM (1x Crucial 48GB DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM @5200MHz) and Windows 11 Pro, the graphics card driver (Adrenalin Edition 24.9.1) works fine. But if i plug into the 2nd RAM slot the exactly same second RAM module to upgrade to 96GB, the graphics driver crashes directly after a very slow boot. An AMD message dialog states the crash out and the graphics card runs in safe mode, is deactivated in device manager.

Any idea on that issue?

Cheers,

Imed

Reverse the memory modules.

Try the second memory module in the first slot.

If that works fine try the first memory module in the second slot.

And if it still crashes, you have a bad stick of memory or something in the memory timings is not right.

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

Looking at ASRock Support for your X600 Mini PC all the Crucial RAM with 48GB shows the supported speed of 5600: https://www.asrock.com/Nettop/AMD/DeskMini%20X600%20Series/index.asp#Memory

Screenshot 2024-10-15 120407.png

It does show that it is verified to be Overclocked. I would run the RAM at 5600mts with 96GB installed and see if it continues the same issue.

You might also want to run each 48gb Stick separately to see if the PC works normal. If it does than it might be a compatibility issue with the 98GB RAM installed using Crucial.

I would download OCCT and run all three tests GPU, CPU, & PSU and see if it fails while running the tests.

I would open a Crucial Support ticket to see if they believe it is a compatibility issue or not since you didn't purchase the RAM in a 98GB Kit but each separately.

Also the slow boot might be a clue to your issues if it boots quickly with one stick of 48GB of RAM.

EDIT: Looking at AMD Specs for the Ryzen 8700G it mentions the Maximum Memory Support is 5200MTS:

I have the same problem But with AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS and 780 Graphics. It starts up But the Graphics Driver is disabled. I have the feeling that somehow the iGPU has problems with 96GB Memory

Both RAM Sticks work separately but put together the iGPU 780 cannot be activated and crashes. So it seems a problem with the total amount being to Big. I don't know if it is a Software or a Hardware Problem sent the Cras data to AMD. Else the Computer seems to work

Does you laptop support 96GB of RAM installed under its Specs?

Also when it comes to Laptop RAM Memory you must install RAM that will be compatible with your laptop and other RAM stick installed.

Please post the exact Laptop Make & Model?

Thanks.

I am having the same problem as well. Started with the 24.8.1 release of the driver. I've read several posts that talk about swapping ram slots or one stick being bad but I have run memtest on it for 2+ days with no memory errors. Also dual boot the mini PC with Manjaro Linux and have no issues on the Linux side. Something changed in >24.7.1 versions of the driver to break it. I have the MinisForum UM790 Pro for reference.

I solved it by installing Amd Adrenalin Version 24.8.1 now it works without problems. Minisforum um790pro with latest bios 1.0.9 and newest Windows 11 24h2

For me the 24.8.1 driver is the last one that will boot without the GPU crash issue, but it will not run my preferred benchmark for Windows / Linux, FurMark.

24.7.1 is the last one that will load / run FurMark.

I don't know if you use FurMark for testing purposes, but if you have time download it and try to run on 24.8.1 and let me know if it works for you.

I tried to swap RAM modules, played with the speed, BIOS-Reset, ... nothing helped.

But after downgrading (just the graphics driver) to 24.7.1 it worked with 96GB installed.

Looks like starting from 24.8.1 there's a compatibility issue. Hopefully AMD will fix that in a future version.

24/48GB modules are a non-power of 2 module size. This might be an issue as the driver will try to enable shared memory on a power of 2 capacity (dual channel on both sticks) .. so that could point to driver and/or windows memory management failing.

Logic would be driver check mem and doesnt get the expected amount at allocation. Which could show as buffer overrun or access-violations. As GPU driver is pretty much at kernel level, the system would crash.

Also mem speed is linked with timings. Using 2 dual rank sticks you need to relax timings. Thats why testing with a lower speed alone might not do the trick unless you drop the speed way down (e.g. 5600 -> 4800/4400)

Was your RAM purchased as a set, or individual sticks.  What your describing sounds like a timing problem.  It used to be (1980's-90's), high powered servers and workstations required "Registered RAM".  In other words thi RAM was manufactured as a set and the timings were guaranteed IDENTICAL in each module.

If it ain't broke; don't fix it!

Hey where you found new bios for it?

Can you please share a link?

I could run FurMark with 24.8.1 driver but I use windows 11 in Release Preview. (24h2) later drivers didn't work either testet until 24.12 (which didn't work)

AMD doesn't support Windows Preview versions (beta).

If you have issues with a AMD driver in a Windows Preview OS you need to open a Microsoft support ticket so that both MS and AMD can investigate the issue.

Windows Preview OSes may have some tweaks or features that is not used by the Public Windows OSes that may be incompatible with AMD drivers or not fully supported. That is why, in my opinion, AMD doesn't support Windows Preview OSes.

Can you check if Rebar/SAM is enabled?

Change it so its disabled or enabled ..

Does that change anything? Also if it works like that, try a game to test if its stable.. FPS doesnt matter for testing.

It could be an bios/windows/driver issue, so please report it to AMD support. That wont fix it, but without those it coyld be considered low prority.

Those reports will direct Support crew to the issue and severity. Also inform you motherboard vendor, as their firmware might be at fault.

MS support,.. well save yourself the effect. On windows 11 it could also be antwoord issue with 24h2 if you installed that.

I had the same issue, the 780m onboard drivers kept crashing at start up - resulting in white screen (I could hear the windows load up chime). I was on the latest adrenaline software, I used the AMD clean up tool and reinstalled an older version 24.7.1, I'm going to attempt to update to a newer version at some point. But, I'm just glad to have the computer back up and running.

Asus TUF Laptop - FA617XS AMD Ryzen 9 7940HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics 4.00 GHz with (AMD Radeon RX 7600S (discrete/Hybrid)

Upgraded Ram from 16gb to 64gb Crucial 4800mhz

I hope AMD see this issue resolve it soon, I don't like to use outdated drivers and software.

Update: managed to update to version 24.8.1  - version 9 and the latest are still crashing the 780m drivers.

Does anyone else have some good news in regards to version 9 and 10 versions - I contacted ASUS too as AMD said they can't offer more help.

Hi All,

Do we know if AMD has addressed this in newer releases of the software.

I put 96GB of memory into my Beelink SER8 and it all went wrong from there.

is there a place to lodge this as a major bug?

cheers

The last response i had off amd was fobbing me off back to Asus, saying it was upto them to ensure compatibility, bearing in mind we already know asus and the motherboard supports the ram sizes we are trying to install. They won't look at this, from their perspective, they test to 32gb limit compatibility and their engineers won't test the software further than that. It's a nice way to keep the market sectioned off from each other; so when they do release software it will be to match their new hardware they want to sell, labelling it as advancement in the hardware industry, when really we have had that hardware then whole time.

ok, but I don't have Asus at all, so what now? AMD gave out licenses, promised that it would work and didn't realize that people would buy what was promised? this is the second time - the first was that the processor doesn't have a NPU, as stated, and I have to run it through some fences and heaps of information garbage, now it turns out that memory for the stated capacity is also impossible or something else. Gentlemen working at AMD, have you even heard about steepness and that the consumer should have a guarantee for the product?

Not a clue, Amd just fob me off back to my computers manufacturer, ASUS throw me back to AMD ...

If you have 2*48GB, those sticks are probably dual rank. So it could very well be that your timings are failing.

Reset timings and try at 5600Mhz, without tweaking timings and expo/xmp.

Just to be sure, have you tried both sticks alone? So just 1 stick at a time?

It could be a bios issue or timings. Also do you have a live CD or USB with another OS. Try to boot that, windows sometimes is weird with hibernation and fastboot. Both could result in crashing at uefi boot. ( can test through safe mode, if that works delete hibernation file on c: and disable fastboot. Reboot and hope it works)

I have a Beelink SER8 8845HS mini-PC with the following key components:

  • AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS CPU
  • AMD 780M GPU
  • Crucial T500 Gen4 M.2 NVME Solid State Drive (2TB)
  • Crucial T500 Gen4 M.2 NVME Solid State Drive (4 TB)
  • Crucial 96GB DDR5-5600 SODIMM Kit (48GB x 2)
  • Qualcomm NCM865 Wi-Fi Card for AMD w/ Wi-Fi 7 & Bluetooth 5.4
  • Windows 11 Pro

I have been unable to update my AMD video drivers past 24.8.1 - the current AMD driver is 24.12.1. The problem I am having is as follows:

  • I do a clean install of the new driver, removing all AMD software with the Cleanup Utility.
  • The driver installation begins. When the screen initially goes black and comes back, the colors are oversaturated, and the picture looks unnatural.
  • The screen blanks again; this time, it says, “No Signal,” indicating that it's not picking up a video signal from the DisplayPort connection. It then says, “Enter Sleep Mode.” The computer is still running because you can hear the music playing.
  • The computer sound cuts off, and the system reboots without any action on my part.
  • It then reboots, and the Beelink image appears on the screen but goes black again.
  • The computer is working because you can hear the Windows boot sound, and the webcam turns on for facial recognition via Windows Hello. However, the screen remains blank and eventually says, “No Signal” and “Enter Sleep Mode,” indicating that it has lost the DisplayPort signal again.

It takes one or two hard reboots to get the screen to come up again, and it boots with a low-resolution, oversaturated display. When I look in Device Driver, I find the following error message:

rmiller1959_0-1736605755304.png

I then re-ran the AMD Cleanup Utility and reinstalled the older drivers so it would work again.

After weeks of troubleshooting with the vendor and even the monitor manufacturer, I came across a thread similar to this one that indicated an incompatibility between AMD graphics drivers and systems with 96GB of RAM. I didn’t think the memory amount would be an issue because the system’s specifications say it supports up to 256GB of memory. However, I decided to swap out the 96GB for a 32GB kit, and the updated drivers loaded without incident:

rmiller1959_2-1736605755312.png

rmiller1959_3-1736605755317.png

I have tested this with two identical systems, and the results have been the same. Beelink said, “AMD has not yet released a driver that is compatible with 96GB of memory.”

It doesn't seem very sensible for AMD to pair a CPU that has the capacity for 256GB of memory with a GPU that can’t operate with 96GB of memory. I will try a 64GB kit to see if that will work, and I will share the results here.

That is both strange and very interesting.  Good trouble-shooting on your part and I hope you find that a 64 GB RAM kit works too.  I bet the problem is associated with the motherboard and how it handles the larger amount of memory, but I could be wrong.  Yes, please post your 64 GB RAM kit results when you have them.

As Albert Einstein said, "I could have done so much more with a Big Al's Computer!".

As promised, I tested the current AMD graphics driver with 64 GB of memory installed in my mini-PC:

rmiller1959_0-1736973826182.png

The system booted properly, and the graphics driver loaded successfully:

rmiller1959_2-1736973826189.png

rmiller1959_3-1736973826191.png

We can say conclusively that the new AMD graphics drivers have an issue with 96GB of RAM, and AMD needs to address this. I’m not holding out hope that they will, but perhaps someone from the company monitors this community and will take this back to the developers.

Hi all,

a small update from my side.

I used the time to try a Ubuntu 24.04 LTS installation on the same system, including AMD drivers. System runs stable even with 96GB RAM installed. Also a few stress tests worked without any issue. Looks like this is a Windows Driver Issue.
