OpenCL only working with sudo on Ubuntu 22.04 with amdgpu and Rx6400

Hi,

could anyone advise what might be causing this issue. It resembles the behavior when the user is not a member of the "render" group.

I recently bought an Rx6400 for debugging and testing, to ensure that my OpenCL code works on AMD GPUs.

I installed amdgpu drivers from AMD repository,  .deb package version  1:5.4.50400-1510348.22.04  ,

 rocm-opencl-runtime  and rocm-opencl-sdk  .deb version 5.4.1.50401-84~22.04 ,

and ran the amdgpu-install script:

$ amdgpu-install --usecase=graphics,opencl,openclsdk,multimedia,rocm,rocmdev,hiplibsdk,mlsdk --no-dkms --no-32 --accept-eula

I added my username to the "render" and  "video" groups.

$ groups nick
nick : nick adm cdrom sudo dip video plugdev render lxd

However the Rx6400 GPU is only found when clinfo is used with sudo. Otherwise the "AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing" reports "zero devices found".

This occurred when the Rx6400 was the only GPU, in PCIe slot 1 and running a Samsung 4k monitor.  The "sudo only" availability of the Rx6400 continued unchanged when I added my Nvidia GTX3080 in PCIe slot 5. However the GTX3080 does not require sudo for clinfo or other OpenCL code.  (The motherboard is Asus WS X299 Sage/10G. These are the recommended slots for 2 GPUs).

Does anyone have suggestions as to possible causes ?

Best regards,

Nick

Here is the sudo clinfo output:

My apologies, I misunderstood the division of purposes between the two pages.

In case any one finds this thread, the issue has spontaneously resolved itself, possibly after some .deb updates I installed yesterday.

Thanks.

Hi @NickHock ,

Thank you for posting it.

For ROCm related query or issue, please use its github issue page: https://github.com/RadeonOpenCompute/ROCm/issues

Though it may not be related to the above issue, however, please note that the latest ROCm release (v5.4.1) does not officially support RX 6400.  For more information, see: https://docs.amd.com/bundle/ROCm-Installation-Guide-v5.4.1/page/Prerequisites.html

Thanks.

Hi @dipak ,

Yes I appreciate that an RX 6400 is a 'baby GPU' for ROCm, and not its target platform. However OpenCL should work (it is required for many things, e.g. OpenCV, and some physics engines), and benchmarks of OpenCL on RX 6400 have been published by others, so it "has worked" for them. (e.g. https://browser.geekbench.com/opencl-benchmarks ).

For my current use, OpenCL is a "must have", while ROCm is a "would be nice to explore". AND OpenCL is working to some extent.

Does anyone know how the driver might be in a "sudo only" state, and not accessible to the "render" group ? ... and how to fix it.

It seems like a permission related issue that's why the gpu is not accessible without "sudo". As I mentioned, please post it to the ROCm issue page which is the better place for any ROCm related support.

Thanks.
