As the title says, I have researched a lot about that issue that AMD is currently not supporting HDMI 2.1 Forum VRR 4K@120Hz on Linux. However, I also read a lot about frustrated gamers (including me) because of this. Correct me if I'm wrong: I got the point that AMD drivers are not supporting it because Linux drivers have to be open source but the HDMI 2.1 Forum standard does prohibit open source drivers.
Discovering this issue was really frustrating to me, as I upgraded all my stuff to HDMI 2.1 4K@60Hz standard (TV, AV-Receiver and GPU) and now I cannot even use it. Yes, I should have done a research before buying a new AMD graphics card but I really was not expecting this as I thought HDMI 2.1 standard is HDMI 2.1 standard. And I am clearly not the only one running into this issue, as far is I have read.
Now: I really would hate the fact that my next graphics card upgrade would have to be an Nvidia instead of an AMD because AMD drivers are generally much better supported on Linux, which is the main reason I decided to jump off to and AMD graphics card.
Will there ever be a solution to this issue in the future? I did not find any information about this for future plans. Maybe someone from AMD can give an offficial accurate answer about this?
Thank you in advance!
This unfortunately is a legal issue and not a technical one. The dust can only settle after all the lawyer stuff's done.
Meanwhile, DP->HDMI cable serves as a workaround that'll get you 4K120 at 4:4:4.
@AdrianPThanks for answering. Hopefully this annoying lawyer issues will be solved soon.
As a workaround I will try such an adapter you mentioned and report back if it worked.
Thanks again!
@AdrianPJust to make sure before ordering such an adapter, because it may be we are talking about different things: My question was about getting VRR to work and your answer to the workaround was to get 4K@120Hz. I'm not really sure such an adapter would get VRR to work. Doesn't VRR work differently on DP comapred to HDMI?
The workaround won't allow for VRR/ Freesync however
