Hello, so I got a problem with my Radeon graphics card, sometimes my screen flickers and blue parts come on screen, mouse is responsive and hovers over the blue parts, then my screen goes black and comes back with a message that says something like "A driver timeout has been detected" or something like that. It ONLY happens in desktop environments specially in Adrenalin edition or other apps (has happened in Telegram desktop and Chrome too).
I tried reinstalling windows, currently running windows 10. Reinstalled GPU drivers using DDU and AMD Cleanup tool, Installed the latest driver 24.9.1, reinstalled it, installed previous driver 24.3.1, nothing seems to fix it permanently.
XFX graphics card do have an switch next to the power cable, its currently on right one which has higher core clocks but it is less stable in furmark and gives less FPS in it (No clue why).
By the way, I ran furmark for an hour, these are the results: 78 FPS most of the times (1366 clock), around 76C temprature, Absolutely no screen flicker or black screen or crashes in Furmark
It's the same in games, I have ran CS2, GTA5 and Minecraft for now, they are really fine and perform really well without overheating or stuttering what so ever. The problem seems to only happen in desktop environment. First time it happened in Adrenalin edition in Record and stream tab, when i switched to record it flickered and give that message, done that again and it flickered again, but now... it's fixed and it doesn't flicker everytime in record and stream tab, but the problem is still there, I do get the flicker and driver timeout in desktop and I do not know what to try now.
Should I install linux based OS to test? or should i stick with the lower clock switch which gives more fps and more stable frames? Any old drivers should I install?
It comes with driver version 18 in the box, its too old for now
The best way to isolate the problem is to reseat everything on your motherboard, unplug and re-plug every cable and try a different video card if possible.
For now it's too little information to determine the cause.
I would suspect the DRAM as the most logical cause since the problem only occurs in certain situations and not continiously and in the worst case the motherboard is to blame.
But then again, it might be something very different.
You could also try another monitor first since the refreshrates might be out-of-bound which causes these kind of problems as well.
Also try to check if the videocard BIOS is the right one or even update that anyhow.
Hopefully you get your system to work normally again.
I've tested the rams, they are fine. I've installed my old potato (GT1030), it's doing alright. I did reseated when I wanted to install my old GPU so thats not the case.
I don't really know where to check what is the right version for my GPU to update or check if it is the right one.
Motherboard is fully functiional, but there is just a slightly problem, it's an Z68 chip (2 & 3rd gen intel chipset). Could it be just too old to handle the graphics card?
your RX 580 is stable under load but struggling with desktop environments, which could indicate a driver or power management issue. A few things you might try:
Have you monitored VRAM clocks and voltage when the flickering happens?
I've already disabled hardware acceleration, "The lower clock mode" actually has higher VRAM Frequency but lower Core clock (1100/2120 compared to default 1366/2000).
I've tried 22.1.2 but nope, still the same.
The linux experience was fine, nothing happened. It is for something in windows.
I have reseated power cables they are fine (I had an GT 1030 in this build, it was really fine without problems)
I couldn't be able to monitor, because it's really unexpected, but I'll try.
The flickering is there with graphical problems (Blue pixelated squares come visible, windows in unusable in that state, but my mouse is there and it moves even over where the flickering or graphical issue is happening)
Update: What i really understand from the problem is that when i try to customize anything related to GPU (Clock speed, Memory speed and fan speed) this happens, I assume it's an hardware incompatibility because I have 3570 with an Z68 MB
But still, isn't there any solid fixes?
I can almost trigger the problem using MSI Afterburner (I just opened it and waited for it to crash) and also the performance tab in Adrenalin edition (Just watching the graph will make the graphical glitch to happen and flicker)
Underclocking/overclocking core and memory and changing fan speed graph will surely crash (it doesn't happen instantly, it might be alright for 5 to 60minutes but eventually it will)
I also checked my notifications in windows and I saw something related to AMD software. "Default wattman settings have been applied due to an unexpected crash"
From my assumption, it's the driver to hardware thing, but I don't know what exactly is making the problem, It might be the motherboard (Z68P-DS3) because it is from 2011 (Yeah it's very old). I have already updated the BIOS to Ua6 (latest version which is UEFI) but still its old
Still I have not fixed the issue, just more information I've got
My best advise is to underclock and undervolt the GPU and see how that goes.
