Hi
I built a desktop (details below) 3 months ago and it was working fine until a few days ago. Tried many troubleshooting options (details below) and can’t seem to figure out where the true problem is. Hoping to get some advice on what to do next or if this could potentially be a driver issue.
Thanks!
Description of Original Problem: It started to restart randomly while I was playing Genshin Imapct for about an hour. Sometimes my screen turns orange or purple before it disconnects my peripherals and crashes/restarts. When I do a cold reboot, the problem sometimes happens as well when I’m just browsing the web, streaming a video or have a video chat.
Computer Type: Custom Desktop Build
GPU: MSI Radeon RX 570 ARMOR 8GB OC – Stock settings no OC
CPU: Ryzen 5 3600 Stock settings with stock cooler
Motherboard: Gigabyte B450 Aorus PRO Wifi (BIOS version F50)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200MHz C16 (CMK16GX4M2B3200C16) slots 2 and 4
PSU: Seasonic Focus Gold 550W SSR-550FX
Case: Phanteks Eclipse P300 - 1 exhaust fan at the back
Operating System & Version: Windows 10 Education
GPU Drivers: 20.91
Chipset Drivers: AMD Chipset Drivers Revision Number 2.10.13.408
Troubleshooting:
Updated windows and reinstalled GPU drivers from AMD website (removed with DDU). Ran Cinebench for 30 minutes without problems. Ran Heaven benchmark and crashed/restarted a few minutes in.
Turned off XMP and cleared CMOS, ran Heaven and still crashed.
Replaced PSU with Seasonic Focus Gold 650W from another working computer and reseated RAM and GPU. Ran Heaven, still crashed.
Swapped back to original PSU (since working 650W PSU still had crashes) and updated all chipset drivers from AMD and reinstalled GPU drivers again (removed with DDU). Ran heaven successfully and tested Genshin Impact for an hour successfully. Let the computer cooldown for 15 minutes and ran Heaven again, and it crashed/restarted again.
Checked windows event viewer and saw “WHEA Logger: Event 18. A fatal hardware error has occurred. Reported by component: Processor Core”. Ran windows memory diagnostic and there were no errors with RAM. Tried Cinebench again for 10 minutes and no issues. Heaven still crashes (might be successful the first time but crashes during the 2nd time)
*While I was trying to Google//look-up other troubleshooting answers the screen would sometimes turn orange and restart itself in between all these tests.
*GPU temps were high 70s to during Heaven and CPU max temp was in the 90s during Cinebench.
If 650W PSU also has restart problem (not WHEA), your motherboard is causing this problem with high probability. The reasons for WHEA and restart problems can be different.
There is a program called OCCT it is a utility that can diagnose many of the components in your system. You can pick it up free from OCBASE dot COM. It can help isolate a bad GPU, Power Supply, Memory etc....
The errors you are experience can be many different things. The trouble shooting steps you have taken are good ones.
Hopefully this will help aid you in figuring out what is going on.
Hey! I've also been having an issue with a RX 570 and I used your advice. While there is a small chance that my issue lies in my PSU, I consider it unlikely as the CPU test didn't freeze my PC. What would you recommend my next step to be?
Did additional RAM test with Memtest and RAM was fine. Swapped the GPU with identical card from another working system and everything was working flawlessly and the current card crashed the other working system . I was able to run Heaven and Cinebench multiple times and game/web browse through the night.
Going to RMA the card.
Thanks everyone for their input!
