I think the title would have been more apt to say the Vega 64 deal ruins the RX 590 launch.

Nah, the $100 cheaper RX 580 makes the marginally faster RX 590 a no-buy card, all the reputable review sites even say it. It's way too power hungry, hot, and expensive for what you get, and was created just to fill a price gap between Vega and Polaris. It may beat the GTX 1060 at 2560x1440, but you wouldn't use either card at that resolution in the real world.

It does have a superior power delivery system, meaning it potentially has a lot more legs under water cooling versus an RX 580.  But at that level of power usage, may as well just get a Vega.  Vega at least has support for DX 12_1 features, while Polaris is only DX 12_0.

You are dead on about being created to fill a gap, but with Vega prices down, the niche it is trying to fill doesn't seem to really exist.

It will take more than two years to get AMD's next high-end gaming GPU.
I think it's not a bad choice to have it now. And it is cheaper than MSRP by 100 dollars!
I purchased ASROCK 's Vega 64 at NEWEGG' s sale.
