Mainboard DRAM LED/Blackscreen when Game Fullscreen

Hello,

recently i built my new PC. Specs:

CPU: R7 7800x3D
GPU: RX 7800XT GIGABYTE
RAM: GSkill Trident Z5 Neo RGB DDR5-6000 CL30
MB: MSI MAG B650 Tomahawk WiFi
CPU-Cooler: Alpenfohn Brocken 4 Max
SSD: Lexar NM710 2TB
PSU: beQuiet Pure Power 12M 850W
Case: Gamdias Athena P1

After some troubles i could get the pc to start. Windows is installed and running, however the PC blackscreens and is unresponsive whenever I start a game.

I have started:

Fifa 23 - Instant blackscreen + Mainboard DRAM debug led is orange, keyboard and mouse act as if PC is shutdown but fans are still running

AmongUs - worked

Counter Strike 2 - Playing for around 46s, then blackscreen + Mainboard DRAM debug LED is orange, fans and peripherals as in Fifa

Things ive done/tried:

Newest BIOS (2 day old as of the writing of this)

Newest drivers for CPU/GPU etc

Disabled AMD Expo

4800Mhz

6000Mhz

Tm5 ram stress test (with furmark, PC crashed after i opened Taskmanager mid test)

memtestpro (100% on all threads with 0 errors)

different ram slots (only one ram at a time/in different slots)

also, after changing stuff inside BIOS the mainboard shows DRAM debug LED for a good 10-20s before booting windows.

Looking very much forward to help since this cost a lot of money, everything is appreciated. Thank y'all in advance!

The 10-20s delay is likely normal RAM Training, but definitely sounds as though you're having memory related issues.

You didn't specify what capacity your memory kit is. Do you have 2 DIMMs or 4? Do you know if they are single or dual rank?

The MSI motherboard has a diagram printed next to the DIMM slots (in addition to the manual) to indicate which slots to use. If only 1 stick use A2. If using 2 sticks use A2 & B2.

Hi, im sorry i must've forgotten.

RAM is 32gb in 2 DIMMs. Ram is defenitely in the right spots.

Also, it has now happened as well without load, as I was within windows. I had clicked GPU-Z to open it up but the PC crashed and went black with the usual DRAM Led

Thanks in advance

Ok, I don't believe there are any dual-rank 16GB DDR5 modules, but the SPD tab in CPU-Z should confirm. The reason I ask is most motherboards do not support higher memory speeds when using either all 4 DIMMs or 2 DIMMs of dual rank modules. You stated that you also tried disabling EXPO and run the memory at default speed, which didn't help.

G.Skill usually makes good memory but at this point I'd have to suspect the RAM. Do you have the ability to borrow a kit just to try it and see if it makes a difference?

Why dont you believe I have 32GB in 2 x 16GB DIMMs, I'm confident its extremely common nowadays? Anyways, I might have misunderstood what exactly you mean by that as english isn't my first language.

The B650 itself is ranked by MSi themselves for up to 7600Mhz.

Technically AMD ranks the 7800x3D DDR5 speeds of up to 5200Mhz, which is merely to guarantee the RAM working even when using cheap or low quality RAM. In reality the CPU can easily handle the 6000Mhz, in my case though even 4800Mhz makes it crash. Even if it worked at very low frequency, it wouzld be unacceptable because its just far under what I've paid for.

If I'm allowed to post it, heres the RAM from its OEM. https://www.gskill.com/product/165/390/1661410135/F5-6000J3038F16GX2-TZ5NR

I sadly cant borrow DDR5 so hey lets spend another 130€ so i can try a new one right? Will update in a few days when it has arrived then

Sorry it was misinterpreted, I was stating that I do not think that manufacturers have made dual rank DDR5 16GB modules, so the modules you have are probably single rank, which is better for higher speeds. But if you check CPU-Z SPD tab it shows whether single or dual rank.

You are correct that if you disable EXPO the system should have zero problems running at SPD DDR5-4800 and yet you still have crashes.

It is unfortunate that you have to purchase another set of memory to confirm but hopefully you will get your money back when confirmed the original set is defective.

I'll tell you about the single rank thing whenever i get it to run again haha.

At this point I have accepted the possibility of faulty RAM, however I'd like to know how high the chances are of a faulty CPU as well. Delivery takes time and the longer I wait the harder it will be to get a refund, so do you think I should consider also buying a new CPU?

Im confident it will all work out in the end, the retailer I've bought from is very trustworthy and I have bought my old PC a few years ago from their shop as well.

Thanks for your help so far

I experienced almost the same errors, it is not the reason why the ram is single or double sided, can you test the ram with both windows and memtes and see if there is no error? Resetting the bios and reseating the processor socket plus clean installation of radeon 24.1.1 may help, virus programs may have changed the windows registry, it worked for me! This is what I did, good luck.

Allright, just installed new memory and I have the same issue again. Screen goes blank, monitor loses the source, and I'm left with the DRAM Debug LED... Whats the next step? Im going to try the idea you've had erol, and then I will see.

That is unfortunate.

Have you tried contacting MSI support to see what they say about the DRAM Debug LED?

Also one other thought, do you have SAM enabled in Adrenalin?

Okay not what you asked, but I went ahead and tried what erol said.

cpu reaseating, bios battery out, etc.

Before that my pc had crashed when i tried the new RAM, i then had to -again- pull out the Cable of the PSU. After that i heard a singular click noise, could that have been the PSU dying there? I had a BeQuiet Pure Power 12 850W  tho so not a cheap one. I can try my fathers PSU, he -for whatever reason- has a 1000W NZXT one.

And even if i get it to run again, I still have that issue with the DRAM Led, unless the CPU reseating worked

Do you have any idea what is wrong?

(yes the PSU is in the right position. In case thats relevant, i had to pull out the cable on at least 5-10 occasions because whenever i was stuck in the blackscreen i had to pull the cable out because holding the power button doesnt shut the system down heeeeelp

So you had to unplug the power supply to turn the PC off after a failed boot, you heard a click and now after reconnecting the power supply the PC won't turn on at all?

The click you heard is likely either power supply or power surge protection kicking in. You may want to check the power strip reset if you are using one, try a different outlet or check the electrical breaker in case that tripped.

Sorry to piggy back off your thread, but I am experiencing similar issues with a new build with the same processor and a MSI PRO B650M-A WIFI. I have contacted MSI and we're going in circles on troubleshooting with no results. I've tried new memory sticks and get the same issue no matter which slots I use. I see that there haven't been updates here since January, were you able to resolve your issues?

Hello,

Im afraid that I cant offer a real solution, but what worked for me was removing my cablemod.

During troubleshooting I had stress tested my ram, which didnt cause any problems. However, I still had the issues with that select pair of RAM. My best idea is that during the RAM stress test the the 24PIN mainboard cable doesnt draw that much power. When I then start a Game, the entire system starts taking in a lot more power, which I suppose the 24-Pin cannot handle.

In all honesty, I have no idea if the Cablemod was really the issue. I swapped almost all of the important parts, CPU, Mainboard and RAM, but the second i had used the regular beQuiet PSU Cables and not the Cablemod, the issue was resolved.

As this PC obviously cost a lot of money, I stopped troubleshooting further after it worked. My plan was to undervolt the powerhungry and very hot R7 x3D, but I still have no idea what exactly is wrong with the system because after changing RAM I had the same issue, even after swapping out the Mainboard. I could still try a new CableMod, but the retailer of the CableMod returned it as they stated they couldnt reproduce the error. But hell no im not trying that.

I really hope this works out for you and you can fix it, but I have not found anything remotely close to my issue. And I did ask on AMD forums, beQuiet Discord etc etc.

Fingers crossed
