Complete Novice looking for help optimizing new PC build

Hey everyone,

I'm really struggling to set up my PC to run effectively. Here are the specs:

CPU: Intel Core i5-13600K 3.5 GHz 14-Core Processor ($317.24 @ Amazon)

Motherboard: ASRock Z690M-ITX/ax Mini ITX LGA1700 Motherboard ($149.99 @ Newegg): https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/Z690M-ITXax/

Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB (2 x 8 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory ($39.99 @ Amazon)

Storage: Crucial P3 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 3.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive ($43.85 @ Amazon)

Video Card: XFX Speedster SWFT 309 Radeon RX 6700 XT 12 GB Video Card ($339.99 @ Newegg)

Monitor: asus vg248qg 24 (1080p, 165hz) - https://www.asus.com/us/displays-desktops/monitors/gaming/vg248qg/

Operating System: Windows 11 Home 64-bit, version 22H2

Driver Version: AMD Software: PRO Edition Version 23.Q3

Power Supply: Cooler Master V750 SFX GOLD 750 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular SFX Power Suppl

I'm only going to be using this build for gaming, and have been trying to set it up to play Elden Ring and Rocket league. I used Jayz2Cents guide for the initial setup https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xhHtHMQygzE

My current issues are stuttering and a little ghosting as well as just not great performance. I had had some success with the stuttering by capping the FPS to 45 while playing Elden ring... but it feels like my setup should perform better on low-medium settings.

Any advice or any links to a guide that would work would be so greatly appreciated.

You might not like my answer but here is my suggestion. I would return the CPU and motherboard and exchange them for AMD 5800X3D and a motherboard with B550 chipset. (I use a B550 Tomahawk but there are many to choose from). Doing this will allow you to take advantage of AMD’s Infinity Cache and RDNA2. Just remember enable Resizable BAR in whichever motherboard you decide on purchasing BIOS to enable Smart Access Memory (SAM) in the Adrenalize app.

The CPU is on sale at Amazon for $291:

DDR4 will work perfectly in a B550 or X570 motherboard.

Thank you for your help! I will look into those options now

I would really love to help you more but I guess that we are a bit limited here on the Red Team while you rock a "Blue Heart".

DDR4 for the 13th gen may not be the best pick specially at those speeds, I understand that Intel is not that sensitive to XMP the same way AMD is but you may be losing around 8 to 10fps against DDR5.

You also have an unbalanced build. A Z690 board paired with cheap memory kit while you could get at least 5000 rated sticks.

You also bought the K so I assume you will be overclocking it, find some tutorials on how to reduce core voltages so it can run cooler&faster.

Since you bought the memory from Amazon and they have good return policies, I would return it if you can a get a better rated sticks with low CL.

As for the 6700XT, the dials in Adrenalin are very straightforward, push the power limit up and bump up the clock while reducing core voltage a notch. When you get a crash free gaming, you are good to go.

I do have a tutorial but for the older Polaris cards so its a bit useless now.

Anyway, for the basic, turn on the yellow knobs and push the power limit all the way UP.

Then do 50 to 100mhz increments on the clock, watch out for temperatures, the swift is not as good as the merc even with 3 fans. When you are happy, lower the voltage down 5-10mv at the time.

Always monitor your temps. When you get more skilled you can go after VRAM or get a more advanced tweaker like MSI Afterburner.

Good Luck

Don't forget to enable SAM

You can use Automatic presets too!

I’m sorry for asking in this forum instead of messaging you directly but I didn’t know that SAM could be activated with a “blue” component. If so I apologize for all the posts I suggested people pair Radeon with a “red” CPU.

Oh, and you are absolutely right. But Intel/Nvidia systems uses another name for it.

Here you go.

Thanks a lot for you thoughts! do you expect that this would improve my performance significantly without needing to trade in my motherboard + CPU as Hawk suggested? I was looking into their recommendation too and it looks like making the hardware changes that both of y'all suggested could get pretty pricy since the AMD 5800XD isn't compatible with ddr5 memory sticks so I would have to go for the AMD 7800XD.

I based my suggestions on AM4 socket because you listed DDR4 3600. If you have DDR5 please forget everything I said.

oh shoot you're right. my motherboard isn't compatible with DDR 5 anyways, so I couldn't just make that switch.

Ok thanks again

Hey again, I actually have 1 more question for ya if you don't mind.

I ordered a B550 motherboard (ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming), but I noticed after ordering that it supposedly only supports up to Ryzen 5 CPUs. and when I looked in further it seemed like all of B550s only support up to Ryzen 5 CPUs. Am I misunderstanding what I am seeing... or would I need a motherboard with a more advanced chipset to run this build?

Don’t panic. You’re fine. That board supports 5000 series CPU’s.

ahh I see. I got it in my head that a the key number was 7 in the Ryzen 7 5800X3D

Thanks for clarifying

I’ve done that too!
