Age of Empires 2 and 7900 XT Massive Stutter, Poor Performance and Occasional Freezing PC

I’m having the problems described in the tittle with the following specs playing Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition:

Windows 10
Ryzen 7800x3D
Sapphire 7900 XT
32gb DDR5 RAM
Tuf Gaming B650 PLUS

The problem is easily replicable by playing 3x3 or 4x4 versus de CPU and reaching mid/late game, or even just selecting only CPUs playing each other, but poor performance can be noticed even before that.

The game clearly stutters or drops frame rates every minute and just kind of freezes for 2-3 seconds.

I managed to play the game just fine when I was using my old PC with a much lower quality GPU. The problem has only just started after buying the new PC and it happens ON THIS GAME ONLY - I have tested a couple other games which don’t suffer this problem.

Has anyone else suffered a similar issue with 2 DE and know a fix?

Thank you!

Windows 10 Pro 22H2

Ryzen 5 5600 at 3.5 Ghz

16 GB DDR4 Ram Corsair Vengeance RGB

X470 Crosshair Hero 7

Samsung 970 EVO 1TB SSD

Radeon 6700XT

Frames drop from 140+ to 6 or 7 and the game will crash UNLESS I fire up Task Manager or something with the windows operating system (CMD and run a ping command for example). Then the issue comes back within 90-120 seconds.

If I wait too long to press the windows key or alt tab into a different application the game crashes ungracefully.

I play AOE 2 Conquerors on a Ryzen 5 5600 and RX480.  I can't relate to the stutter issue but at least your card is posting FPS.  I don't notice any sluggish behavior or stuttering but I have no idea what the FPS are.  Now I have discovered several things needed to enable AOE 2 to run properly on Windows 10 - 11.

Do you have Net Framework 1 installed?  You might want to try it.  Also if your running a high res monitor (144 Mhz or similar) you may need to adjust .   There is also an AOE 2 fix  for the resolution and scaling up.  I know it is a nightmare to get it run on Windows 11.

If it ain't broke; don't fix it!
