Is there an alternative to AtiQueryMgpuCount()?

I am trying to determine if a target system is operating a single or multiple GPUs, connected via CrossFire.
I know the method provided by ATI, which consists in calling the function AtiQueryMgpuCount(). However, for several good reasons, I cannot build my own executable with a third party static library (atimgpud_s_x86.lib) and I cannot hand it over with a third party DLL (atimgpud.dll).
I would like to know if another method exists. I would be particularly interested in a method similar to SLI detection, which solely utilizes a function available in NVCPL.dll, this DLL being part of the driver and therefore installed on every PC with a Nvidia adapter.
