AMD HD 7970 Drivers for current Linux distributions (Ubuntu)

Question asked by clintonrbrown on Sep 10, 2017

I've been looking and as far as I can tell there is no longer official driver support for AMD HD 7970 with Linux. I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 at the moment. I noticed there is also limited to no official support for many other AMD cards. In fact it's so bad that when searching the internet many posts I found on Linux friendly websites said that if you want to do any gaming on a Linux machine you should just go with Nvidia because AMD support is poor.

Are there any future plans for supporting Ubuntu distributions officially? I would like to make Ubuntu my main OS and am held back now because I have an AMD graphics card and have trouble running games because of poor driver support, because of this I have to maintain a dual boot environment rather than being able to run solely on Ubuntu.

I've got a couple years until I'll be able to upgrade my PC or build a new one so hoping that AMD starts supporting new Ubuntu versions before then, otherwise it's off to Nvidia.
