    DXVA on RX460 , 0Mhz reading questions.

    vonchen

      Hi

I got my new Powercolor AXRX 460 2GBD5-DH/OC few days ago. Gaming is fine.

But I have many problems with DXVA and WattMan UI/Fan control.

      My spec:

      INTEL XEON E3-1230V2

      GIGABYTE B75M-D3H BIOS F15(changed from MSI ZH77A-G43)

      8GB+8GB DDR3 1333 RAM no OC.

      Benq GL2450 on DVI

      Seasonic G-650W

      Windows 10 Pro 64bit 1607 updated

      Driver: 16.8.1 and 16.8.2.

I do not OC. All runs in default setting.

I built a clean install Win10 1607+16.8.2. All issue persists.

Problem 1: DXVA caused 0 MHz reading

Although it seems no effect to anything.

This only happens when I play DXVA videos.(MPC-HC or youtube). GPU core clock(not usage) will down to 0 MHz shortly and back to 2xxMHz. Sometimes in WattMan it will keeps showing 0 MHz, but GPU-Z shows it now back to 2xxMHz.

In this video we can see more clear about how 0 reading happens:

      DXVA acts strangely RX460 16.8.1 - YouTube

      eGT5j0Z.jpg

I never got 0 MHz reading while gaming:

      JCN3hz9.jpg

Problem 2: While using DXVA, display driver randomly stopped (both 16.8.1&16.8.2). Gaming is fine, never have stop while gaming.

      U3rz7wM.jpg

All were caused when using DXVA:

      2MhEEkm.jpg

Problem 3: DXVA caused Fan runs to Max speed unexpectedly and randomly. Or sometimes gives me strange reading(Fan is not working but shows XX RPM)

From the picture below we can see the Temperature is only 44 degree C but Fan speed is 3132RPM. It should be 0 RPM. Also the target / Max temperature 80-80 is not my wrong setting. It jumps to 80-80 automatically while Fan suddenly began working. Only happens on using DXVA randomly. Not every time.

      iV1LI47.jpg

      Error reading 141 RPM:

      CurgIpk.jpg

Problem 4: Radeon Settings WattMan  UI freezing / WattMan  UI crashed when using WattMan randomly, after crashed I needs to re-open Radeon settings again to use WattMan.

      WattMan UI crazy freezing:

When I am using WattMan UI(when FAN 0RPM), it is very laggy/freezing. In the video below shows that mouse cursor moved but slider bar's moving is delay for about 3 or more Seconds. UI still usable but everytime WattMan outputs the usage graphic on the top, I got a lag/freezing Radeon Settings window.(only the window not full screen.)

WattMan UI lag issue 16.8.1 RX460 - YouTube

But if Fan starting to work, WattMan UI freezing disappeared and runs smooth.

While Fan is working WattMan UI no lag - YouTube

      WattMan UI crash:

Not every time but often. Next time I can launch it without crash, and next time I got it again.

If I logout and login windows, first time WattMan opening will be fine, and then next time I got it again.

I only modify Fan settings and Temperature settings but even default settings these issues persists.

Seriously, I encountered hardware failure these days before and after I bought RX 460. First is my old friend HD7850 died, second is 2 of bad 2GB memory, third is my motherboard died. They worked with me for more than 3 years. Other parts are still working. So I thought yes it could be my PC's problem.

But after I replaced/removed the bad hardware, the story is not stopping.

1.All issues are still persist. Even on a brand new mother board.

2.Only happens when I am using DXVA.

3.Issues about WattMan UI there are many reports out there.(ex: reddit) This means not only me.

      4.Nothing about DDU, A Clean Install Win10 1607 +16.8.2 has same issue.

Gaming testing is fine. EX: BIO HAZARD benchmark or 3D MARK, and 3D online game TERA.

So I wonder this is ether driver issue or bad video card.

I am hard to believe that the latest released card is a bad hardware(In Taiwan it is even not so easy to get the newly RX400s card, they are almost sold out as soon as it released), plus it only happens if I am using DXVA.

While gaming I am happy with this new video card, so I believe this is driver issue related to DXVA.

I had reported some of these issues to AMD bug report. I hope this is only driver issue.

Any commit or suggestion is appreciated.

      P.S.

English is not my main language, sorry for my bad English.

An update for DXVA part :

Web Browsers (even default H/W is enabled)

There is a plug-in for Chrome & Firefox called "H264ify". This plug-in can force youtube stream H.264 video instead of VP8/VP9 which is a video format that seems do not support H/W and so it will eat CPU resources while playing.

Some videos on Youtube will not have H/W even if usually H/W in Browser's setting is enabled by default.

This plug-on makes things changed. Although if you use this plug-in, 4k 60FPS option will be hidden.

          ex:

          [UMAX UHD 4K/60FPS] JIYEON (지연) - 1MIN 1SEC (Never Ever) (1분 1초) - YouTube

It seems only if I use this plug-in, then TDR will happen(still randomly, and still not every time but often).

But if I disable this plus-in , some(or I have to say many) videos on youtube will not use H/W and eat CPU resources.

          MPC-HC or potplayer etc.

It seems if I use LAVFilters-0.68.1 ,instead of build-in codec for those players, display driver will be more stable and no TDR.

I maybe have to test it more to make sure.

In LAVFilters video settings there is a VP9 option which has a warring message said that VP9 HW decoder maybe unstable. Does this means it will crash display driver if force decoding VP9 with HW? or only means player crash it self not the graphic card's driver?

          I do not know.

But anyway if this is a fixable issue for display driver, hope it can be fixed.

            Update for BlueskyFRC crashing:

I encountered a gray/colored screen freezing issue while using LAV+BlueskyFRC(all are DXVA enable) with full screen watching.

I had reported this to AMD Bug report Forum.

            LAV 0.68.1(copy-back mode)

            BlueskyFRC 2.2.1

I finally figured out what caused TDR or colored freezing issue.

Browser(only TDR happens in my case)

              Chrome 64bit or Firefox 64bit with h264ify : html5 60FPS videos

              ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f82S_WCDV8Q

The only way I know is to disable H/W in browsers till next driver release.

DXVA supported DirectShow player(gray/blue/colored freezing needs reboot)

This only happens on LAV+BlueskyFRC. If I only use LAV, then native and copy-back is fine.

It seems LAV's "Copy-Back mode" has issue with BlueskyFRC.

When using LAV and DXVA is "Copy-Back mode", add BlueskyFRC(also DXVA enabled) will caused gray/blue/colored screen and freezing. If I use "Native mode" then it will be fine.

Another stranger thing is if GPU Fan is spinning, then using LAV DXVA+Copy-Bcak mode+BlueskyFRC, it will not crash display driver. This is really weird. But I only tested this one time so maybe just a lucky.

                  Hi

Same issue here, playing video on Kodi using DXVA, when I stop it computer hangs with black screen, hard drives seems to still work.

Latest 16.8.3 drivers doesn't fix the problem.

                  Regards.

Confirmed is an issue related with DXVA and clocks, I'm using ClockBlocker and it patch the problem by keeping clock to max, avoiding downclocking, so is a fault in the drivers that AMD should fix asap.

                        Hi

Thanks for the replay. Agreed , hope driver fix will come soon.

But I used ClockBlocker , it did not fix my Firefox/Chrome DXVA issue which caused TDR event while playing youtube 60FPS vidoes.

Thin kind issue always totally randomly so sometimes it looks fixed but in fact not fixed, in my opinion.

For now I need to try to find out some special settings to avoid the issue, very annoying.

Also report issue to here, maybe have more chance to fix it:

                        Update:

16.9.1 is released and upgraded. Just do some testing for about 1HR.

                        Not fixed:

                        • Radeon Settings app random crash issue while opening WattMan tab.
                        • Fan unreasonable 100% issue randomly

                        m7vmoKu.png

Seems fixed: (I do not want to speak too quick)

                        • 0 MHz reading on WattMan while using DXVA
                        • DXVA cauesd TDR on Playing Youtube h264 FPS60 video issue.(P.S Chrome/Firefox 64bit + h264ify plug-in)
                        • WattMan UI lag

Anyway WattMan UI is smoother than previous version, still a little lag but it is acceptable now.

I will reboot PC and re-test again , hope it really fixed.

Will report later if I encounter any issue again.

                              Ok,

DXVA is not fully fixed , just acceptable for most PC working.

Some codec seems still causing issue, I do not know if this is driver issue or codec/software issue.

If I use LAV then everything will be fine.

                              1. Launch Potplayer 64bit 1.6.62949

                              2. Use potplayer default video decoder on H265 and HEVC

                              3. Enable dxva but no copy-back (use native)

                              4. Enable H265/HEVC: VLD (Bitstream)

                              5. Open a H265 video or download here:

                              http://jell.yfish.us/

                              jellyfish-90-mbps-hd-hevc-10bit.mkv

Then will see a green image and sometimes cause TDR or hardware freezes.

But anyway it crashed PC so I think driver stability still need more works.

                                Update:

It seems 100% Fan speed issue will not occur if I do not use Afterburner/GPU-Z in background, although I still have to use WattMan to see GPU status.

Whatever I play DXVA videos or gaming , in this scenario Fan is fine for early testing.

Still need more test to make sure though.

                                    Update 16.10.2

This is a summary for now with 16.10.2. So in my case, some issues are driver related issue and can be fixed by driver upgrading.

                                    Fixed:

Problem 2: While using DXVA, display driver randomly stopped (both 16.8.1&16.8.2). Gaming is fine, never have stop while gaming.(This issue is fixed at 16.9.1)

Problem 3: DXVA caused Fan runs to Max speed unexpectedly and randomly. Or sometimes gives me strange reading(Fan is not working but shows XX RPM)

As for these two issues(is related to wattman) :

Problem 1: DXVA caused 0 MHz reading

It still there, I may think it is a software reading issue, but not really hardware issue since if it really down to 0MHz my pc should be freeze.

Problem 4: Radeon Settings WattMan  UI freezing / WattMan  UI crashed when using WattMan randomly, after crashed I needs to re-open Radeon settings again to use WattMan.

The WattMan's UI freezing / lag issue seems fixed, but Crash issue still happens.

Qt5Gui.dll crashes RadeonSettings.exe every single time I click on the WattMan tab.

And still in DXVA has instability issue with GPU monitor APP like GPU-Z.

                                    watchdog.sys and dxgmms2.sys caused BSOD

The Wattman crash issue and DXVA related GPU monitor APP stability issue still remains. But the driver stability for me now is better comparing to early released version.

Hope the instability issue can be fully fixed in the future.

                                    As a conclusion:

Most of issue in my case is related to DXVA , and WattMan.

As for gaming, I do not have any issue while gaming, but this is based on I only play some DX9 online games.

So I can not confirm if all games(most of them are new released games and use DX11 or DX12) have issue or not.

                                      UPDATE:

Wattman crash issue is fixed on 16.12.1 and 16.12.2.

But the new issue for me is wattman does not retain manual settings after reboot or hibernate, it seems ignore manual setting and use default factory setting.

Fan speed problem after new driver r9 390

I now using MSI afterburner to manager Fan curve because I want to use higher RPM while GPU is loading than default setting.

                                        Thx for helping my problem.

Problem 2: While using DXVA, display driver randomly stopped (both 16.8.1&16.8.2). Gaming is fine, never have stop while gaming.

Crimson 16.9.1  worked on me !!!!
