Hello,
I have Thinkpad T14s Gen 3 AMD with 6850U CPU. I bought it because I was reading that this is beast CPU, but Im currently using Windows 11 on it and noticing really poor performance. All drivers are installed from the Lenovo. The biggest issue for me is that 8k 60fps (which is in AV1 format) is not playable on the youtube. Even 4k 60fps is not so great because there are dropped frames. Can somebody confirm that this has or has not AV1 hw decoder?
AMD official web site does not list neither AV1 decoder and encoder for this particular CPU, but on the some web pages on internet it says that AV1 is supported by series 6000.
Nobody has answer?
AV1 not mentioned in specs https://www.amd.com/en/product/11666
Here is CPU World's specs on your mobile AMD Pro processor: https://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Zen/AMD-Ryzen%207%20PRO%20Mobile%206850U.html
This other processor website, not sure how reliable the information is though, compares the Ryzen 7 Pro 6850HS vs the Ryzen 7 Pro 6850U: https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-amd_ryzen_7_pro_6850hs-vs-amd_ryzen_7_pro_6850u
Note: I would open a AMD Support ticket to verify the above information from here: https://www.amd.com/en/support/contact-email-form
Thank you very much for the info and instruction. On the same CPU monkey web site I found this info and I was confused. Also here i found info that AV1 is supported https://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Ryzen-7-PRO-6850U-Processor-Benchmarks-and-Specs.615519.0.html.
@goodplay i found this info and it is strange, why web sites from @elstaci say different.
Found this article explaining AV1: https://hothardware.com/news/av1-codec-support-and-importance-explained
AV1 decoding is supported in hardware on AMD RDNA 2 GPUs (outside of the Navi 24 based 6500 XT), NVIDIA GeForce 30- and 40-Series GPUs, Intel Xe and Arc GPUs, along with mobile chips like the Samsung Exynos 2100 and 2200, various MediaTek Dimensity SoC’s, and Google’s Tensor processor. Qualcomm is notably absent from this list but has indicated the codec will be supported in its Snapdragon chips starting in 2023. Decoding support is great for content consumers, but without hardware encoding support, AV1 content is much scarcer.
From the article above:
Switching video content over to AV1 has not been an easy task, though, despite its free and open nature. AV1 encoding and decoding can be accomplished by brute forcing it on a CPU via software, but it is more computationally intensive than even H.265 HEVC. This puts it out of reach for lower end hardware to handle, not to mention the impact on battery life for mobile devices
Since it is a Video Codec might be why it isn't mentioned with the APU processor. You would need to find the specs of the APU GPU to find out if it supports the AV1 Video codec or not.
CPU-Monkey website seems to show the GPU specs of the APU processor which is why it is mentioned. But like I said I don't know how reliable the information is on that processor website.
