upgrade from 3600 to 5600: update bios to what

Hi,

Still new here. I am upgrading from 5 3600 to 5 5600G.

[Basic data on system is MSI B450 Gaming Plus Max, EVGA GTX 1650S, Corsair Vengeance 16GB, DEAD 5 3600]

On the MSI website https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PLUS-MAX/support

BIOS for the 3600 is listed as 7B86vH0, dated 2019-07-01

BIOS for the 5600G listed as 7B86vHB, dated 2021-02-08 [ Optimized and support AMD Ryzen 5000 series processors.]

The latest BIOS is  listed  as  7B86vHK, dated 2023-10-26.

I know I have to change BIOS  for the 5000 series so which one is it? Should I stop at HB, jump all the way to HK, or step it from H0-HB-HK.

Any help is appreciated.

According to MSI Support for your Motherboard CPU List for the Ryzen 5600G you will need BIOS version or newer 7B86vHB.zip

I would install the latest BIOS Version for your motherboard the one you have listed: The latest BIOS is  listed  as  7B86vHK, dated 2023-10-26

NOTE: If you want you can install BIOS Version "HB" first and see how that works out and then update to the latest BIOS version.

As long as you have BIOS "vHB" or newer installed your new 5600G processor will be recognized and boot up as long as you have compatible RAM installed.

As to the process to upgrade your BIOS, some motherboard does suggest going through several BIOS updates first while others you can update to latest without updating from other BIOS versions.

Looking at your MSI various BIOS Versions to download and reading the "Notes" in each one there is no indication of having to go in steps to go from "HO" to "HK".

For instance, In some Gigabyte Motherboard BIOS Notes it says you first need to update to BIOS version so and so before updating to a newer BIOS version, as an example only.

Since you are upgrading to a 5600G from a 3000 series processor you will need to make sure your current RAM MEMORY will be compatible with the new 5000 series APU: https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/B450-GAMING-PLUS-MAX/support#mem

EDIT: If you have BIOS version "vHO" installed that is the original first BIOS that came out for your motherboard. It is best to update to the latest since each BIOS versions includes fixes, makes hardware more compatible, better security, etc.
