Ryzen 9 3950X high temp at idle

Hello,

I have bought 8 months ago a Ryzen 9 5950x to replace my Ryzen 7 3600X, and problem started happening, I tried to update my bios to the latest version without solving this issue

My computer is as follow :
motherboard : ASRock B550 Phnatom Gaming 4

bios update from 09/27/2023

memory : 2 × 16GB 16GF2X08LIII43-12-K from when I had the ryzen 7 + 2 32GB CMK64GX4M2E3200C16 I bought with the ryzen 9

cpu : AMD Ryzen 9 5950X 16-Core Processor

gpu : Radeon RX 580 8GB 4 screens connected (2 1440x900@60Hz, 1 1920x1080@60Hz, 1 2560x1440@144Hz (sometimes, a valve index is connected too, I use a Display Port MST to connect all the 5 screens)

cpu cooler : Noctua NH-U12A

The high temps issue is appearing when I'm on the bios, if I stay there for more than 5 minutes, it shut the pc off, with cpu temp reporting around 110°c

I can boot the pc on the desktop, and check the idle temp, and get 90°c

I've put a human fan directly blowing in the pc to cool it down around 80°c

If I don't use the human fan blowing in the pc, I can't even play a youtube video without the pc shutting down (and I can't really game on it either)

Then, I updated the bios to the latest version, and the issue is still there.

I checked the cpu cooler, and the thermal paste, changed it, but nothing change

When the pc shut off because of high temp, I immediately checked the temperatures behind the cpu on the motherboard (cold) on the cpu cooler (cold) on the vrm (cold), I'm trying to find a laser thermometer to check it more precisely

I undervolted the cpu to 1.02v, and I get 10°c lower, what I'm also doing now is disabling core in the os, I set only the core 1, 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, 29 on, and I'm now at 60°c idle

I had the same issue with the 3600X being at 70°c idle, it just got worse with the 5950x, I don't know what to do now

Does anyone have any advise ?

I really don't know what's wrong with this setup, I may be blind and the issue is obvious, I need an external help please

flutterbrony, AMD says:

"Cooler Not Included, Liquid Cooling Recommended"

Seems very simple to me. Your cooler is not up to the job. You could try running both fans full speed and see if that helps. I recommend you get a good AIO. John.

First your 5950X has a TDP Rating of 105 Watts and a Maximum Operating Temperature of 90c.

According to Noctua Compatibility Chart your Noctua NH-U12A should be strong enough to prevent your 5950X from overheating.

It has a high compatibility with your new processor: https://ncc.noctua.at/cpus/model/AMD-Ryzen-9-5950X-1044

So you either have the Noctua installed incorrectly or it is defective or you have very poor air circulation inside your PC case.

Make sure the Noctua is making good even contact on top of the processor and it is snug and not moving around when you jiggled it.

If you have 2 fans installed make sure it is in the correct PUSH-PULL Configuration where one fan pushes air into the CPU Cooler and the second fan pulls air out of the CPU Cooler.

If you have both fans in a PUSH-PUSH or PULL-PULL configuration, The CPU heatsink is not getting enough air flow to remove heat efficiently.

Make sure the Thermal Paste was applied correctly on the processor before installing the CPU Cooler.

Try to have an aggressive Fan Profile Curve where the CPU Cooler fans turns on at maximum at a lower processor temperature.

To check for poor air circulation, remove the side panel and see if your processor's temps are slight lower than with it on. If it is then that would indicate poor air circulation inside your PC case.

Poor air circulation could also be due to one or more PC Case fans not working  or not enough PC case fans to circulate air efficiently inside your PC case.

Also ambient room temperature affects your overall processor temps. The hotter your room is the hotter your processor temperatures will be on average.
