If you are talking about the Motherboard's CPU Power connectors of 8 Pins and 4 Pins,

You need the 8 Pin CPU Power connector connected for the PC to work and the CPU AUX 4 Pin is in case you decide to overclock the Processor and the Processor needs more power to run.

The CPU AUX 4 Pin connector is connected when the User is going to Overclock the Processor to where the processor requires more power than supplied with the normal CPU Power 8 Pin connector.

You can connect the CPU AUX 4 Pin connector if you want. But the CPU Power 8 Pin CPU power connector must be connected.

To be clear: if you have a PSU lacking the 8+ 4 pin cable, either get a cable if it's modular from the manufacturer, like Corsair offers cables for theirs or buy one that has the right cabling. Some of Corsair's pre 2019 PSU's came with only one CPU 8 pin cable when many boards like my ASUS TUF X570 Gaming-PLUS requires 8+ 4+. This Corsair RM750x has 2 CPU 8 pin cables, so I was ok.

While one can technically run just the 8 pin, avoid doing that. Do it right, these components aren't getting cheaper or more available.
