Hello,
Experiencing stutter (sawtooth framerate; 40±10 FPS) in specific areas of a specific game (Hades 2). I would consider upgrading my specs (given below) but I am first trying to understand what happened:
- sank 100 hours into the game with no performance problem this summer & start of autumn;
- on November, my SSD died; re-installed my OS on an equivalent disk a week later; (no change to the rest of the hardware)
- since then, I cannot get a smooth 60 FPS except in some very precise locations of that game.
I have been searching high and low for anything software-related - found a number of knobs that proved to be dead-ends (covering the kernel, desktop environment, Steam); badgered Mesa, Proton, drm/amd; nothing to show for all that.
I have games in my backlog that my iGPU will not be able to handle anyway, so it would make sense to upgrade; this unresolved “regression” still bothers me. If my problem stems from a system misconfiguration (e.g. power management?), there is a chance a new GPU will not solve the problem.
Very much a software person and I figure there might be aspects I have not considered, so posting here to get some perspective. Won’t rehash the details of every knob I’ve turned because it would make this OP even longer & more meandering; FWIW the drm/amd issue covers most of that (§ “What I tried”), but will provide more details if that can help.
(That report also includes FPS measurements, dmesg & Proton logs)
Hoping to investigate this situation under a less software-focused lens, but honestly not sure how actionable this report is for this community - apologies if it is not ideal, and thanks for your time.
