AMD CPU advice?

It's been a decade since I built a rig. Pretty set on AMD CPU, but would appreciate this forums guidance on the three below options. Purpose is gaming + normal desk work, all are within budget.

  • Ryzen 7 5800X (8-core @ 3.8 GHz) for $237 (heck of a sale right now @ almost 50% off)

  • Ryzen 7 5800X3D (8-core @ 3.4 GHz) for $357

  • Ryzen 7 7700X (8-core @ 4.5 GHz) for $345

  • Please point out if I've missed an obvious option here

The 5800X vs. 5800 X3D is tripping me up most of all due to the lower core clock on the X3D. From reading this forum I thought the X3D was the best value within the 5K lineup. Does the X3D win out over the X due to the larger L3 cache?

Also, I lean towards the 7700X for the higher core clock in general, but let me know if the X3D's L3 cache (or another variable) makes it a grab.

Thanks for your input!

Hi,

You have to think trough, if you want somekind of future proof, AM5 will be the ONLY WAY but you'll also spend more.

On the other hand, AM4 just saw a 5700X3D release that could fit the budget of many.

I would go for the 5800X3D if gaming is all you want but beware that the next time you need to change everything.

The 5800X is more focused on productivity than gaming when comparing with the X3D part.

See some games on YouTube comparing between 7700X and 5800X3D and make the call based on what you play.

Good luck

The X3D extra cache has been proven to increase gaming performance well above the non-X3D chips in most games. If gaming is the primary use of your PC you can't go wrong choosing an X3D part. Conversely, most productivity software does not see any benefit from the extra cache, those applications rely more on straight up core count.

@johnnyenglish makes a good point regarding AM4 being at the end of its lifespan, while AM5 is the go-forward platform for AMD. Initially the high cost of DDR5 and AM5 motherboards at time of launch may have been prohibitive for many users, however more affordable options are now readily available. If thinking about going the X3D route you should also consider the 7800X3D.
