8700g, npu not visible in task manager

Screenshot 2024-09-02 114124.pngScreenshot 2024-09-02 114320.png

Hi,

I have a 8700g processor with an NPU, Windows 11. I installed the drivers from https://www.amd.com/en/support/download/drivers.html. Why can't I see the NPU in the task manager? What should I do?

Kind regards,

Andreas

Andreas, please get your AMD drivers from here. I do not see a problem. The task manager sees the iGPU. Did you look under under "Display adapters" in the Device Manager? Do you have any symptoms? John.

We posted the same link. This is all new for me. I have just installed the new system. As I understand it, we have a dedicated NPU for the 8700g processor. That means I expected to see APU and NPU in the task manager. My "display adapters" show the dedicated graphics card and the 780m. In this video, NPU and 780m show up in the task manager: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u1FIVBSjBB0. But, this seems to work only for the laptop processors. Maybe I misunderstood something.

Andreas999, the 780M is the iGPU. I do not even know what an NPU is. If you have symptoms please post them otherwise why are you worried about something in the task manager?  John.

From Microsoft Forum concerning AMD NPU not showing up in Task Manager: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/all/npu-of-my-cpu-does-not-show-up/8d519ab3-7823-4...

Both the AMD AI Software and above MS moderator both mentioned if you have the NPU drivers installed.

On my previous reply with the link to the AMD AI software there is a link to download NPU Drivers but you need to log on to AMD to be able to download it: https://ryzenai.docs.amd.com/en/latest/inst.html

Install NPU Drivers

  • Download the NPU driver installation package NPU Driver

  • Install the NPU drivers by following these steps:

    • Extract the downloaded NPU_RAI1.2.zip zip file.

    • Open a terminal in administrator mode and execute the .\npu_sw_installer.exe exe file.

  • Ensure that NPU MCDM driver (Version:32.0.201.204, Date:7/26/2024) is correctly installed by opening Device Manager -> Neural processors -> NPU Compute Accelerator Device.

Hi, NPU is new to me and found out it concerns AMD's new AI Technology.

Found this tech site that mentions that Windows is beginning to show support to show NPU in Task Manager: https://www.xda-developers.com/amds-npu-support-windows-task-manager/

I believe the best place for you to post your thread is at AMD new forum AI Forum: https://community.amd.com/t5/ai/ct-p/amd_ai

Good luck and take care!

EDIT: Here is AMD new AI software. It might explain how to see and enable NPU on your Processor: https://www.amd.com/en/developer/resources/ryzen-ai-software.html

But it seems like it is only compatible for Laptops and not Desktop PCs.
