Windows XP driver issues

So here's the deal.

I recently got my hands on a Toshiba Satellite C55D-C with AMD Radeon R3 graphics. It had Windows 10 preinstalled but I found out that it had Windows XP drivers, so yesterday I managed to install WinXP Professional SP3 (32bit) on there.

At the moment I'm nearly done installing all the necessary drivers. I only have my Bluetooth adapter, network adapter and graphics driver left. I already can't find the first two (Bluetooth V4.0 Module (RTL8821AE) and AMD PSP 1.0 Device), and as for my graphics driver, whenever I try to install it, my computer gets stuck on a blank command prompt. I end up having to hard reboot, enter safe mode and uninstall whatever was installed. The lack of it also leads to a BSoD on shutdown and ends up restarting the laptop instead of shutting it down (I am not entirely sure it's due to the lack of graphics drivers though).

Where can I find the first two and how can I get the graphics driver to install properly?

UPDATE: I somehow managed to install my Bluetooth adapter rather easily. 1 down, 2 to go!

The CPU is an AMD A4-7210 APU (with AMD Radeon R3 Graphics)

@BenchFox

Can't guarantee that it works. Try this one: AMD_(ATI)-9.000.300.0000

Check your GPU Hardware ID in Device Manager.

I may assume that there will be PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_9850 and it listed in ini file.

Catalyst crashes so I can't install that driver. You're right about my GPU hardware ID.

3D Guru has several XP Graphics Drivers for AMD hardware. See if any of them are compatible. They have both x32 and x64 drivers to download from: https://www.guru3d.com/files-categories/videocards-ati-catalyst-xp-64-bit.html

Here is the first half of the link above web page:

Screenshot 2022-06-01 124724.png

Now the A4-7210 came out in May 2015 so those XP drivers may not be compatible with a newer APU created after Windows XP went unsupported.

I would try and see if Windows Update will install a compatible XP Driver for your APU processor.

Unfortunately seemingly all of the mirrors lead to dead install links, either on this site or on another site that doesn't load. Also my only other missing driver is my network adapter, so I can't use Windows Update unfortunately.

I went to the latest XP Driver and click on "Read More" and this page came up:

Screenshot 2022-06-01 124724.png

If this was the ATI you tried to install it and failed might be because it isn't for a Laptop rather for a Desktop type PC or simply it isn't compatible with your APU processor.

You didn't specify which AMD Driver from which link failed to install.  The other link that went to MediaFire Mirror link my McAffe Web Advisor warned me as being suspicious. So I didn't go any further.

NOTE: I downloaded the above ATI.exe and used 7-Zip to unpack it. From there you can see if you can install the driver manually using Device Manager and guide it to the "Driver" Folder and see if it installs or not.

Don't know if XP has Restore Point feature or not. IF it doesn't I suggest you make a full System Backup in case something goes wrong.

What is the Network's Hardware ID show?

Simply put your Laptop was made for Windows 10 and not Windows XP so there might be some hardware that is not compatible with Windows XP.

This driver didn't install because it's 64bit and my version of WinXP is 32bit. I tried finding a 32bit driver but all the ones I tried either led me to an error page on AMD or a dead website and the one Qanatoz provided didn't install. I tried forcing your recommended driver either way through the device manager and it told me I needed to insert an installation disk which I don't have. I tried installing a driver from Snappy Driver Installer Origins (it helped me install most of the other drivers) and it gave me that command prompt error again.

The network hardware ID is PCI\\VEN_10EC&DEV_8821&SUBSYS_216210EC&REV_00\4&2DFDE44E&0&0013.

This GURU 3D ATI driver is for Windows XP x32 OS: https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/amd-catalyst-11-8-win-xp-32-bit-driver.html

If the above driver gives you errors in installing than your GPU is not compatible with Windows XP drivers.

As for your Network driver you need a Realtek Network driver. Here is the identification of the type of Reatltek Network chip you have in your motherboard:

To tell you the truth I would just install Windows 10 again since Windows XP is not supported by Microsoft anymore plus the technology is very old.

Where or who did you get this machine from?  It surprises the h*** out of me that you would even be able to install XP drivers.  I see several problems with trying to run XP.  I was not aware that XP even supports any type of blue tooth.  Windows seven has problems in the fact that it will only recognize BT4.  I'm not aware that XP supports PCIe and that is required for both BT and the RX6900XT.

I'm sorry but you need to get the windows 10 drivers for this machine or I'm afraid you will have severe issues with it.  Once you get Windows 10 back on try upgrading to Win 11.  Correct me if I'm wrong; but I think XP also has a memory capacity issue, (4GB is what sticks in my mind).

It's possible that Toshiba might have the driver package for that machine.  If not, you may have to get the drivers from each component manufacturer.

It is definitely an AMD chipset.  Find the motherboard ID and get the AMD drivers for that board from AMD.

I have an MSI Bravo 15 with the 4600H CPU and the dedicated Radeon 5500M GPU, with Intel Wi-Fi 6 ax wireless running Windows 11.

I can't believe that you would want to run Windows XP on this machine.  Too many roadblocks.

Honestly benchfox, this appears to be a very nice machine and it needs an OS that can handle it, and XP is not it.

Forgive me if I appear to be rude.  I've been building desktops for over 40 years and servicing/repairing them and laptops for over 35 years.  In fact I just finished overhauling an ASUS laptop with the end goal to upgrade it to windows 11 for the lady.  However, the motherboard did not have the TPM chip and the CPU was not compatible so she had to settle for windows 10.  Although that was better than the 8.1 version she was running.

If it ain't broke; don't fix it!

I mean I got this for free from a teacher at my high school. It has 4GB of RAM so it should be able to handle WinXP and it'd run rather slowly on Windows 10. I don't think 11 is even compatible, to be honest.

Pretty much what I'm trying to do is have a machine where I can play games from the late '90s/early 2000s. I did originally plan to buy a Windows 98 laptop or something (and ideally I'd have a machine like that) but it costs a tad too much for me at the moment (at least 70 euros). My teacher was nice enough to give me the old laptop that she didn't use anymore, as long as the hard drive was completely wiped. I didn't know that she meant a Windows 10 laptop from 2015.

I tried to make do with what I got. I knew 9x was a long shot so I thought about XP, and I eventually found what seemed to be XP drivers for my exact model. After roughly a week of faffing about with bootable USBs, I managed to properly install Windows XP yesterday. Hell, I even managed to install the drivers for nearly everything. Except for the graphics driver and the network controller (not the adapter, I got that wrong).

I wanna emphasise this: Aside from the graphics running slow, I managed to get everything else working (I plugged in and installed the drivers for an external wifi dongle).

At this point I'm convinced the laptop can properly run XP with no issues, and that there are proper drivers somewhere.

As far as I can tell from the device manager, at least SP3 supports PCI or whatever. I'd installed a driver for that.

(also I don't have a Windows 10 licence, so even if I wanted to reinstall that I'd not be able to as far as I'm aware)

I appreciate your concern. It's clear to me you're an expert. But it seems to work (again, mostly) without a hitch.

AMD Catalyst itself doesn't install on my computer so without figuring that out we won't be able to try proper graphics drivers (I reckon that's what's causing all the problems installing the driver itself). It says it does, but the folder it supposedly installs in always ends up being empty.

If you can help me with this, that'd be brilliant. Thanks.

@BenchFoxTry to install drivers from archive. To do so you need to update drivers manually from Device manager.

Unzip drivers to folder and provide it to Device manager when updating drivers.

You don't need catalyst manager to use your GPU.

ps. to play old games you may need to learn what is WINE project.

Any of the drivers I've found that seem to install end up leaving me at a command prompt (this is of course without using Catalyst). I'm thinking maybe there's a way to install them differently, so they don't end up crashing my system. If not I'm sure there's a driver that won't break my laptop.

I've contacted AMD support. Hopefully, they still deal with these old drivers.

If necessary I'll use Wine or something of the sort to play those old games.

@BenchFoxlook at this resource. I use their script to play old games.
