So, I'm in this position right now. The next generation is around the corner and i'm kinda considering upgrading to the, at the moment, speculative 8800XT, or whatever this is gonna be called. Allegedly this is going to be a 4080 in raster with roughly 30 to 40 percent better ray tracing (I believe than one when I see it).
My problems are:
1: The price. This really needs to be at most 550 bucks. In stores btw, not fake MSRP. I know it's delusional, but that's what my gut tells me.
2: FSR upscaling and frame generation support. Quite a few games have very subpar FSR implementation. The frame generation update for Cyberpunk was a disaster. Also, a number of games coming out in the near future will have DLSS, but apparently no FSR. One very unsavory example here is FFVII Rebirth. Actually this one is really bad because AMD provides the hardware for the PS5, yet they are not even in a position to demand mandatory FSR for PC ports. On that note...
2.5: Market share. The low marketshare of AMD in the discrete GPU market is another deterrent. If this goes any further, developers will put FSR in fewer and fewer games.
This basically leaves me with the positives of not having to upgrade my PSU to a 12VHP one, unless AMD changes their mind on that, and somewhat better pricing. Since I will not buy a GPU with less than 16 GB, my choices are limited to AMD and probably a 5070 ti. I don't want to give Nvidia money, but I kinda realize that based on what happens now I also might not want to give AMD money either.
Thoughts?
