Upgrade to 9070XT from a RTX3060: 240hz monitor supported refresh rate keeps resetting to 40 to 60HZ

Hi all,

After installing the 9070XT the first thing I bumped in to was that the Adrenalin (and Windows) shows only 60hz as a supported refresh rate. When I change the Displayport versions from 1.2 to 1.4 on the monitor's (xg27AQDMG) menu it gets up to 240hz but it resets to 60hz the next time (for example after a reboot).

Any idea what's going on here?

Regards,

2560x1440, true color (32bit)

The bpc is color depth (8 bpc/10 bpc), it will show in amd software settings > display.

Thx for pointing it out. It's at 10 bpc

Do you see "2560 by 1440, True Color (32 bit), 240 Hertz" under System -> Display -> Advanced Display -> Display adapter properties for Display -> List All Modes? If yes, can you select and click OK?

No I don't. It's doesn't go over 60hz

So, all you did was to change from RTX3060 to 9070XT? You are using the exact same DP cable and no additional monitors to the xg27AQDMG

Did you do a clean driver uninstall using DDU?

yea, I even tried a second cable to no avail. I did use DDU to reinstall. Not very convinced of the available cables anymore though. should be DP80 minimum right?

I've ordered a new cable (1.4 certified) and it's still the same. When I start the pc again, it's back to 60hz. I'll try DDU again to remove everything and reinstall again. I really thought it was the cable this time (apparently a 1.2 cable).

Latest update:

1. Used DDU again to remove any sign of the drivers and software. Also applied the AMD cleanup utility for some good measure and checked the factory default mark when reinstalling the latest AMD driver (including Adrenalin) package.

2. Issue with the DisplayPort 1.4 is the same which was disappointing. When I switched the DP stream from 1.4 to 1.2 on the monitor OSD, like usual it detects the max 240hz but with the new cable, for the first time the 'Display information' screen showed the monitors HDR certification as well. Sadly, shutting down and booting up, it was back to 60hz.

3. Replacing the DP cable with a HDMI cable and the refresh rate goes up to 144 and stays there after a reboot.

Try the other display port outputs on the RX 9070 XT.  Maybe this is a glitch in the Adrenalin 25.3.1 driver.  I don't think you want to go back to the previous driver (25.2.1) however.

Sadly, trying the other ports hasn't solved the issue. Maybe going back to 25.2.1 might be a solution? Was there something wrong with it?

The Adrenalin 25.3.1 release included updates for the new 9070 GPU, from what I understand.

I wonder if some app is setting the refresh rate lower once it activates upon a restart.  Kind of like Kensington Mouse changing mouse settings from Windows after it starts up.  You could try disabling the motherboard apps (as in Armory Crate if you use Asus motherboards) or even iCue if you have Corsair RGB stuff.

It doesn't look like that's it either. Disabled most start-up apps which didn't solve it.

I've switched to HDMI for the time being. Perhaps it gets fixed in a driver update or I might get around to do a fresh install of Windows. Thanks for thinking along @BigAl01 @fsadough and @goodplay
