RX580 Prevents Windows from rebooting/shutting down

Dear Interwebs,

I have a very odd issue affecting my current system:

My Sapphire RX580 is preventing my Windows 10 OS to properly shutdown/rebooting. Whenever I do that, it will stay on the spinning dots forever (restarting....)

I also noticed that the display won't wake up after Windows wakes from sleep.

Other than this, the GPU works FINE, even with longer gaming sessions.

I'm really noob with windows, since I'm coming from a lifetime of MacOS usage, so if you guys could help me diagnose this, it would me amazing.

So far what I found out is that if I remove the GPU, the computer works as expected.

Please point out how I could at least start debugging this.

The rest of the system is

Gigabyte designare Z390

Bios F9B. Loaded optimal settings

Intel i7 9700k, running stock

650W corsair PSU (can't recall the actual model)

Crucial SATA SSD

Thanks in advance.

Hi!

Big update (I guess)

I started uninstalling every GIGABYTE crap I could find on my system, and after removing some (G Service, ChargeBoost, EasyTune and maybe others), I now can shutdown/reboot correctly!

AMD drivers are still not installed, and I unplugged all the monitors and went back to the IGFX, though the GPU is still connected.

I'm installing AMD drivers now and will report back.

Have you tried to disable windows fast startup?

Have you tried to disable AMD services with Windows Task Scheduler?

Hi @mstfbsrn980

Thanks for the tips. I had tried disabling Fast Startup, and it didn't change anything.

I'll try disabling that AMD services today when I get home. Will post back results.

By the way, what does that service does?

Sometimes the power profiles settings can get change or even corrupted.

This page can walk you through resetting them.

You can also try re-installing your GPU driver after that and choosing the factory reset option.

This is the page that shows how to do that and save your current options to load back in when done if needed:

@mstfbsrn980 Tried disabling those AMD services within services.msc tool, but the issue is still here =(

@pokester This is a new windows setup, so I guess the profiles should be OK. Specially because if I take the GPU out of the case, Windows starts working as expected. I'll try the driver factory reset and will let you know. Thanks!

Please uninstall the drivers with this and check if the problem still exists without any display driver?

Probably a rare chance this could be it but I have run into sleep issues being caused by the lack of the proper monitor driver. Check to see if your monitor has it's own driver and replace the generic PNP driver it is likely using if you didn't load the driver. Some monitors have them and they use the drivers to fix issues, like sleep problems on monitors that don't have flashable firmware. It is worth looking at and trying.

It also may just be a bug in the current driver. I have had terrible luck on my RX 580 with the 2020 drivers and find the last december 2019 driver to be way better. You can get that from guru3d dot com if you want to try. Make sure to run DDU from wagnardsoft dot com before regressing to an old 2019 driver to get a clean slate. I don't think the pre 2020 drivers had the reset option in the driver. Regardless DDU does a better job IMHO anyway.

Hi!

Thanks for taking the time to reply here.

I installed specific monitor drivers, but that didn't change anything: https://www.dropbox.com/s/hg7pn9gximi2phg/Capturar.PNG?dl=0

I ran both DDU and AMD Cleanup tools, but both complained about not running on safe mode.

I tried to run on safe mode, but that requires rebooting, which I can't complete successfully on this computer (not while the GPU is connected), so I ran in regular windows mode, and chose NOT to reboot after that.

The driver seem to be removed, as I no longer see the icon on the system tray, but right after uninstalling I still had issues with rebooting, so I did a(nother) force power down and power up. Upon boot, I noticed that I still had some drivers: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q9a86tx084rre1a/Capturar2.PNG?dl=0

I'll try shutting down now, and post back results

UPDATE: Still same issue =/

You never know what can cause issues. I had a usb printer once that caused the computer to never sleep.

Good thinking on checking those apps. I never install those kind of apps. They usually take up more resources than they are worth.

Awesome job figuring it out for yourself!

Thanks for sharing what fixed it.

I hope this is my final update! =)

I reinstalled the 2019 version of the graphics driver, and set up everything they way it should be.

Disabled the IGFX

Restored my UEFI settings within Setup

So far the system is still shutting down/rebooting, even after booting from MacOS (Opencore) bootloader, so I guess the issue was indeed caused by some GIGABYTE crap. What led me to dig those was the presence of a process called GraphicsCardTunner.exe

Unfortunately I can't say for sure which program was actually causing this, but I'm glad it's gone. I'll keep away from these tools from now on.

Thank you so much to everyone who pinched in here to help!
