RX Vega GH is detected incorrectly using AMD driver

I have a RX Vega GH which is integarated with the Intel Kaby-Lake G.  I tried to use the latest AMD driver (both WHQL 20.2.2 and the Adrenalin 2020 Edition 20.4.1 drivers) and ran any opencl code (tried plaidbench from plaidml and folding@home client), but it hanged the computer.

However, when I tried the Intel RX Vega driver, it ran flawlessly.

I figured out that using AMD driver, it showed gfx902 on plaidml-setup but using Intel driver, it showed gfx804.  I suspect the RX Vega M is not a truely gfx9 gpu so it can run on gfx8 code flawlessly but on gfx9 code, it hangs.  Can AMD help to adjust the driver or investigate on this issue?  I really want to use the AMD driver to see any better opencl performance on RX Vega M.

There are no specific AMD Driver for your RX VEGA GH.

You need to download the latest Intel RX VEGA GH Driver from here: Downloads for Radeon™ RX Vega M GH Graphics

Kaby-Lake Intel Processor is a 7th Generation Intel Processor.

Seems like the last Intel Radeon RX Vega M Graphics driver is from 01/2019.

You will need to open an Intel Support ticket and see if there is a newer Vega M driver or use Intel's own INTEL DRIVER ASSISTANT to update all of your Intel drivers to the latest version.

But from Intel's website, it's pointing back to AMD website:

Download Radeon™ RX Vega M Graphics Driver for Windows® 10 64-bit for NUC8i7HNK, NUC8i7HVK

Okay then if Intel recommends that specific AMD Driver from AMD Download page then it should be compatible.

Make sure you have the latest Intel APU graphics installed as per Intel notes:

Yes, I have both installed.  It runs normally but when it comes to opencl, it hangs when I choose to use the RX Vega M.  I guess it's similar to the following issue as it also detected the RX Vega M as gfx902:

Okay then open a thread here, https://community.amd.com/community/devgurus/newcomers-start-here   first to get access to AMD Forums OpenCL‌ and then you can add your results to that thread to help Dipak in finding a fix.

Hi everyone.

i had some bugs with NUC8i7HVK, (triple monitor only supported 30hz, no HDR, record with AMD software result green screen etc). i contact Intel's support and they asked me to contact AMD support, i contact AMD's support and they told me to connect Intel's support. i understood that both companies doesn't care about us, the consumers.

so i read a lot about the situation and managed to Hack the latest AMD driver installation version 20.9.2 (sept29.20).

attached a link to my google drive, you may download and install.

The full modified software and driver:
Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-Edition-20.9.2-Sep29.zip - Google Drive

after successful software installation, you will need to reinstall the driver manually from device manager, choosing "have disk" pointing to: C:\AMD\Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-Edition-20.9.2-Sep29\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF\ choosing the first "Radeon RX vega" driver, and choose "install anyway"

or you may (alternative for download the full driver from my google driver):

1. download the original driver from AMD website: https://www.amd.com/en/support/kb/release-notes/rn-rad-win-20-9-2

2. "try to install it", it will extract the files to C:\AMD\ and will give you an 182 error (It's ok)

3. Download my edited files from here: Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-Edition-20.9.2-Sep29 - OnlyModifiedFiles.zip - Google Drive (only 200kb)

4. extract the zip file (including the folder structure), replace the files from the ZIP file with those in C:\AMD at the same folders.

5. run the software installation successfully

6. go to device manager, display adapter, radeon vega

7. double click, update driver, choose "i have disk",  > pointing  to: C:\AMD\Win10-Radeon-Software-Adrenalin-2020-Edition-20.9.2-Sep29\Packages\Drivers\Display\WT6A_INF\

8. choose the first "Radeon RX vega"

9. confirm "install anyway"

10. done

now you have the latest AMD driver with a WORKING AMD's software.

Have Fun

and send AMD's support team a complaint about how they treat us. (if many people will do that, maybe they will respond as they should)

Have you tried to run OpenCL program after installed the new driver?

You can try to see whether the driver can let the RX Vega GH/GL work on OpenCL. My test was it will hang the PC if using latest driver to run on RX Vega GH/GL, as the RX Vega GH/GL is customized and sits between Polaris and Vega and cause the driver misconfigure some of the Vega features to this semi-Polaris/semi-Vega chip and hang the system.
