RX 7800 XT: Green Tint and Black Screen Fixed by Reseating Internal Connector

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share my experience with an issue I encountered on my new build featuring the RX 7800 XT, in case others face something similar. Below is a summary of the problem, symptoms, and how I resolved it.

The Problem:

I started noticing unusual behavior with my RX 7800 XT after about 10 days of use. While running a relatively simple scene in Unreal Engine 5, my system crashed unexpectedly. After rebooting, I experienced the following symptoms:

Symptoms:

  1. Green tint in BIOS since day one:
    • The green tint was present in the BIOS from the start, but I didn’t think much of it since it disappeared once I booted into Windows.
  2. After the crash, the green tint persisted even in Windows.
  3. One HDMI port worked but displayed the green tint.
  4. The DisplayPort (DP) port was completely non-functional.
  5. Other displays and cables worked fine with my old GPU, ruling out external issues.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. I swapped out the PCIe power cables for two new, separate cables to rule out power delivery issues (using a Corsair RMX 1000W PSU). (I didn't know about the rule of no daisy chain PCIE to supply hungry cards)
  2. I reinstalled GPU drivers and updated the BIOS, but the issue persisted.
  3. I inspected the GPU closely and noticed a connector near the PCIe slot under the heat sink was not fully seated.
  4. I carefully pushed the connector fully into place and reinstalled the GPU.

The Resolution:

After reseating the connector:

  • The green tint disappeared immediately, including in the BIOS.
  • Both HDMI and DisplayPort ports started working as expected.
  • My system has been stable since, and the GPU runs perfectly under load.

Takeaway:

If you're facing similar symptoms (green tint, missing GPU features, or non-functional ports), inspect the GPU closely for any loose internal connectors or components. In my case, reseating the connector resolved all issues, saving me from a warranty return.

I hope this helps anyone encountering similar problems. Connector locationConnector location
